They were talking about Franklin's failures against top teams and both said it wasn't a lack of talent. They attributed it to PSU being very conservative in big games hoping to just keep the game close until the 4th quarter when they hoped to be able to pull out the win. He talked about how PSU is almost always in these games but just comes up short in the end. I thought it was telling that PSU's offense went nowhere until we fell behind by 2 TDs. It wasn't until then that there seemed IMO to be a sense of urgency.

Thoughts?

All that I know is that PSU almost never puts a team like OSU or Oregon in a position in which they might have to abandon their game plan and play catch up, except for maybe OSU in 2022. Unfortunately, even when we do like at OSU in 2017, we eventually capitulate despite having a 9 point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

I think part of that overall philosophy is that Penn State goes so vanilla in early games and then tries to implement stuff in buggers games. Other big teams basically come out early in the season and act like we don’t need to hide anything because we know we are good. Penn State O acts like they need to hide stuff or be cute.

So I think they are not entirely wrong on O philosophy is just not what it should be.

Perhaps CJF will allow his staff to open it up against the rest of the schedule. I'll believe when I see it.

You are aware I hope that Ohio state lost to Oregon last year. And also got their asses kicked by meatchicken . Which had 5 losses. Then went on to win the championship. Long season anything can happen.

I hope that's the case, but Penn State these days, for some reason, seems to lack the mental toughness it takes to win these type of games.

Alllar is going to fix himself 3.5 years into a 4 year career? Franklin going to suddenly become a strategist? Tactician?

This has been proven to be false. It is just a justification of our fan base as to why we never destroy 1-AA Teams.

Lol. I’ll meet you in the middle because it is not 100% true or 100% proven false. And I say this as someone that does not get worked up if we do not destroy lesser opponents

Do we shrink the playbook and repeatedly run similar plays in some early games? Yes. Does it have anything to do with how we struggle in said games? No.

The claim is that we run a vanilla offense and that’s why we don’t look great. I think it’s the complete opposite. The fact that we simplify things and still struggle with fundamentals is a very bad thing.

2017 against tOSU? we were up by 11 in the 4th...Urban switched to small ball and we lost...no defensive adjustments.

Still considering it a possibility? 🤣
personally I don't realistically see us beating Ohio State...that makes us a 9-3 team and no chance of playoffs, maybe just a better bowl...a significantly disappointing season.

More realistically we may not beat Iowa or Indiana, which would make us 7-5.

I'm not one for giving up, but I'm pragmatic. If we don't come out on fire Saturday against NW, I'd start working the younger players into the lineup, even if it's only for 10 or 15 plays.

This season, based on expectations is lost, IMO, and we'll know after the first few series on Saturday. If it's the same team as Saturday, then 7-5 is more likely. Might as well prepare for 2026
