Anyone have a clip of that player last year that kept tackling people that didn't even have the ball? Can't remember who that was but it was hilarious
That is what concerns me. At this level, you would think the athletes would know the basics. IMHO, I don't think enough time is spent on fundamentals and without the repetition, they start to develop bad habits. It all comes down to coaching. You should be further developing at this level. In some cases, the defense seems to be regressing; in others, there seems to be little development. It is glaring how they miss some of the basics. My high school kids recognize formations better than that. Thankfully I don't run any of Mike's schemes either so that helps.

I would not disagree with that view as well.I actually think it to be different. I think he has these kids so screwed up and intimidates them left & right that they have lost all control of responsibility on assignment.
Iowa then to K-state for coaching. Just like Bob. I had to look it up to be sure.At what point are eyes on Kerry Cooks? I'll give alignments to Stoops all day, but tackling, drive and mental state has to be on the position coach. I thought last year's progress showed promise, but boy does that seem like a red herring now.
EDIT:
BTW, I'll give everyone one chance to guess where Kerry Cooks came from - what school did he play for and what other Big XII team has he coached at.
I hate this nepotism crap.

Exactly! It begs the question...Where do we GET these players? One would think they'd be more schooled in the Basics, just by being recruited in the first place...That they might Block, or Tackle, an opponent in spite of, NOT because of the current coaching!
I think most elite athletes (ones recruited by top schools) don't have good fundamentals. In high school, they're so much more talented than their peers that fundamentals don't matter at all. They can finger tackle most competitors. Position and alignment doesn't matter as they can make up ground in 2 steps on much slower athletes.
I agree and I also believe these kids coming up all the way thru HS are not being taught the basic fundamentals of hits and tackling because of the fear of injuries to the head. Just my opinion.
Maybe a lot of our players are just not all that smart
I think this is the answer for Bama. IMO, the difference between the 5-star kids and the 4-star kids isn't size, strength, speed, agility. It's brains. Saban is getting athletes with brains... maybe not books-brains but sports-brains for sure.
What a recruiting advantage they have as well. I just did population densities at interval distances from said schools:
Tuscaloosa - Population vs Radius
250km (155mi) - 5,599,266
350km (218mi) - 18,851,099
500km (310mi) - 30,315,780
Norman - Population vs Radius
250km - 5,365,078
350km - 13,636,282
500km - 21,543,929
If so, how do we explain Alabama's squads. Really, does Nick and his staff do that much better job coaching up his 4 stars? In my opinion, yes. Ever watch Bama's practice clips ESPN throws out there to tout the SEC? Nick simply does not allow his staff or players to make mistakes like what is and has been going on at OU. There must be a way that a coach can be tough on the kid without losing respect. I don't know what it is that makes that difference, but you either have it or you don't. Nick apparently has it and Mike (and staff) doesn't.
Saban will bench a kid. Mike, Bob and apparently Lincoln will not. Last year watching Evans, give half effort and still play was embarrassing. Plus he was a Team Captain. That told me all I needed to know about the program, the team and their character.
I remember taking a asswhipping and giving a few if a player didn't bring it. I had to Duck Walk the dorm one summer. Every flight and every hall. Thank god I wasn't alone but I couldn't hardly stand the next day and still had to go.
When I see missed alignments, poor execution and half effort and the guy is still in the next play. That lets me know, they're soft or they have NO confidence in our backups. Grab a guy by the face mask, get in his ***, that's what the coaches did to us and it worked. I would like to see some players rip another guy, that's what we did. Get the players behind you, and they will hold the other guys accountable. There's nothing better then a sergeant or two, on each side of the ball.
EXCELLENT, 8085! When can you report to the Coach's Meeting, suited up and ready to kick butt?Saban will bench a kid. Mike, Bob and apparently Lincoln will not. I want the offense to run, run and run some more. Home runs are sexy but we have the O line to control the game...
Stubbornness by Mike will continue to cost us. He's scared to blitz. The offense will need to be nearly flawless to have any chance at a Big XII title.
I don't think a defense has to blitz to be effective. What you need is a good defensive line to put pressure on the quarterback. If you can get pressure by only sending four then you can use seven in coverage. This is why I have believed for years that OU needs to do a better job of getting defensive line talent.
