This goes all the way back to Sebastian Telfair, who broke Pitino when he signed and then later flipped to the draft.

Pitino was infuriated beyond a normal level.

But clearly he has to recruit SOME high schoolers.

Just for the record, Pitino said "I probably wouldn't take him" when asked if he'd take a five star high school recruit who wanted to come to St. John's. He didn't say anything about a four star guy. Sounds like Slick Rick was pretty slick with this answer and wasn't technically lying.

Telfair made a huge mistake. Back when every top HS prospect thought they were the next Garnett or Kobe.

Could be the guy wanted to play for Ricky P and reached out to Rick....lol
He’s a good prospect for Rick from what I’ve seen of him. He gets guys in that range to thrive. Those that aren’t superstars so probably don’t have the biggest ego, but have a good work ethic and motor. He made a killing at UofL finding under the radar guys.

Agree. Look at what he got his first couple of years here. He got the most out of the guys. Mashburn was the first major get and then he started getting more higher pick guys but he always got the most out of the guys floating around the 50 to 70 mark.

It was Todd Golden that I think said that quote about high school players, not Rick Pitino. Rick said something else and I think it was in context of one and done freshmen
