I wouldn't be surprised if this game is one of the most viewed CFB Games of all time.

I recall an earlier thread listing or suggesting some of the most viewed games. We Are! It's in Primetime! The First Ever 2nd round of College Football Playoff's. The game's duration will likely take us right up until the ball drops on New Years Eve. Its almost too good to be true. I still feel the need to pinch myself.

One more thing, if Penn State wasn't playing this evening, my wife and I would probably be asleep by 10-10:30 pm.

Similar to 87 except roles are reversed. Boise state is the underdog that everyone is rooting for.
Huh? Comparing this game to 1987 national championship? I don’t understand

The reason that this game will be watched by so many is it gives kind of a David versus Goliath type matchup like that one did. None of the casual non-Penn State fans are rooting for us this game. All of my friends, neighbors and coworkers who root for teams such as Maryland, Virginia, Notre Dame, etc. are all rooting for Boise State.

numbers will probably drop off some once it is clear that PSU is going to win by a few touchdowns

Not the game itself but more the relative talent levels of the two teams. 1987 Miami was a huge favorite. PSU is a heavy favorite tonight.
Well yes and know. Psu was undefeated and beat number 2 bama at bama. So they had some good wins under their belt.

Are they still your friends?

I don't think this will even be the highest rated Quarterfinal. The biggest viewing games usually have 2 large fan bases and an underlying story. 87 was the perfect storm.

IMHO - All three games tomorrow could easily pass tonight’s rating.
Yeah, I don’t see tonight’s game being a ratings giant. It’s a less than compelling match up nationally. It’s on New Year’s Eve when many have plans. When ND played Indiana in the first round it was the Friday night game and IIRC didn’t have great ratings compared to other games.

I wish I could be asleep. But here on the west coast, people watch the the New Year Eve celebrations on TV as midnight crosses the time zones. So in local times, we get the booms at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, and midnight.

I wouldn't think this would be that highly rated ... neither team is a media darling, or is garnering too much attention, and it's supposed to be lopsided.

By comparsion, our 1987 Fiesta Bowl had a Miami team that captured the media's attention and, thus, even more casual fan's attention. And the legend of JoePa and his hardworking good guys against the flashy new kids on the block full of bravado created a story that interested folks.

Not to mention, there weren't nearly as many viewing/entertainment options back then.

This could easily have lower ratings than either OSU v. Oregon or ND v. Georgia. This could be the least viewed quarterfinal.
