If Johnson develops intermediate passing ...

game he'll be in top half of Qb's in the conference next year. I've thought all year Barker was the better passer and Gran/Hinshaw did phenomenal job of changing gameplan to minimize Johnson's flaws and to focus on heavy ground game. I've always expected Barker to win the position back IF HEALTHY.

I'm still convinced Barker has (had before surgery) the better arm. However, there are a lot of things that make a good QB besides a strong arm. I now expect Johnson to be the opening starter next year. I'm pleasantly surprised at the progress Johnson has made since Sept. It will be fun to see what kind of progress he makes for the bowl game. I thought Johnson would hold the fort down and someone else would lead the team next year. If he can continue developing his throwing mechanics he could see a big jump next year.

1. He seems to have the confidence of his teammates. This is huge.
2. His deep ball is as good as anyone in the conference.
3. He doesn't get easily rattled.
4. Bounces back well after bad plays. (He had a bunch earlier in the year, but seemed unfazed.)
5. Offers enough running threat to make teams prepare for it.
6. His confidence has grown by leaps and bounds.

Gran/Hinshaw have convinced me they can make coach up players. If Johnson can develop the midrange pass he'll make this offense much better and less predictable. We have a dominant running game and a dangerous deep threat. But, add in the normal 15-20 yard pass and Gran has a full playbook from which to work.

I expect we'll get our first glimpse of his progress during the bowl.

That will come as he gets more and more time with the wrs and continues to learn the playbook.

His struggles this season weren't solely shortcomings on his part, but rather an overall lack of knowledge/comfort level with the system and the fact that he didn't get the lion's share of the reps with the first string leading up to the start of the season.

intermediate and short throws are more timing, spacing, rhythm, and chemistry with wrs than talent and mechanics...

this wr group has come up through the ranks with DB...give SJ some time with them and things will start rolling...

I mean, in many ways, this is only the beginning. If this is the ground floor, what is the ceiling going to look like with this crew.

He got that deep ball and thats all I ask for with a power running game. Throw it 20+ and run it run it run it!!! Seattle Seahawk style with Marshawn.

Johnson has come a long way. I'd like to know where Barker would be today without the injury and a full season of coaching.

He's also pretty durable for being as skinny as he is, he's held up well. I think his biggest asset is he's so calm and laid back, doesn't get too high or too low. That bleeds over to the offense and keeps them in check.

He looked really good today. Plays very smart and appears to be throwing the ball a bit better with each game played.

I agree about SJ not knowing the system when Barker's injury occurred, but it's been obvious this year that he has some mechanic problems. He's misssed a wide open Conrad more times than you can count on both hands. Vandy dropped or missed about 3-4 interceptions. Gran didn't trust him with the intermediate crossing routes because of all the interceptions. Those weren't lack of knowledge problems as much as mechanic problems. (Those passes were the strength of Barker's game.)

As stated in my OP, I'm convinced Hinshaw is the QB whisperer and that SJ could be in the top half of SEC QB's next year. You never want to see a player struggle to return after surgery. If (and that's a big IF) Barker is 100% healthy next year I think Johnson still leads this team because of the intangibles mentioned above.

Good teams will scheme us out of the Wildcat and make us throw the ball. Deep throws are feast or famine. Intermediate throws keep drives alive and supports the running game. I doubted his ability to become a consistent passer. I'm now confident he can become more than a player that throws a good deep ball. I'm confident in him as a player and in our offensive coaches' ability to make him better.

He is key to a huge season next year. I think he has done pretty well, but what he can really improve upon is hitting some 10-15 yard passes over the middle and not over throwing those. This is huge because right now the linebackers and safeties are creeping up to stop Boom and Benny and this clears out a space for tight ends. If we can start to hit Conrad in the middle then those linebackers back up to stop that pass, or just hesitate, and that is when our running game will be deadly.

Barker is not as good as Johnson just pointing out a factoid folks

Not sure that we have seen enough out of Barker to really know the answer to this. However, when we saw a healthy Barker in the Southern Miss game he was tearing it up to the tune of 323 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The guy has some excellent talent. I don't think anyone needs to put him down simply because Johnson has had a very good year. UK could be blessed with having several very good quarterbacks on campus, and we need to hope that Barker can get an extra year as a medical redshirt.
