If Kentucky had gone almost 40 years without a title

Would fan support still be the same? Would this message board be a ghost town?

That’s why I think IU fans are in a cult. I was raised to hate two teams: Indiana University and the University of Tennessee. But even I can acknowledge while UT fans are pumpkin humping cousin lovers they do not put up with ******** or losing very well and a riot could break out at any moment.

IU fans just smile and take it. Tell you all about ROBERT MONTGOMERY KNIGHT. Wave a popcorn box around from a meaningless game. Tell you how great that undefeated team in 76 was. They don’t remember it but their great grandparents were there! They all look like they’re next in line to drink the Flavor Aid at Jonestown.

I look forward to kicking their asses again.

/end rant.

Interesting. I think if we hadn’t won a title in 40 years, I’d still be supporting the Cats with every fiber of my being. I don’t like Indiana but I can’t see the negative in being that loyal.

That’s actually a good question I think. I applaud Indiana for their passion. It isn’t what it once was, but they are still active and there.

I see us wane over a few early exits (albeit with good seeds and seasons).

I wonder if we’d match their passion from the time Calbert Chaney graduated until now.

My first real me memories of being a Kentucky fan start in the early 80’s. I’m 50 years old and I’ve seen four championships in my life. 46 years and four titles.

I’m lucky

The UK message forums woyldnt be what they are without cal. Interest was waning and no cal well barney would have gone through 3 more coaches.

Same here - think we always played them early too - like December?

Bonus Points for knowing it was "Flavor Aid" that Mr Jones followers consumed

Not likely to happen.

For all the nostalgia talk we keep moving forward, aren't always looking for someone "inside the family", don't get weirdly cheap in odd fits despite having plentiful resources, and won't stiff upper lip much especially without some equity that takes the concern off the table.

I think the support would be similar but the excitement will probably be at an all time low.

I just think about the teams I support. I'll always support those teams. But my level of excitement kind matches how I feel about the teams chances of competiting. 40 years would be a long time without competiting.

Indiana has devolved to celebrating Sweet Sixteens with popcorn boxes and commemorative rings from Jostens. They don't know what it's like to win anymore.
If IU fans were excited about Sweet 16’s, Clappy would still be coach….and he isn’t. It just so happens that after the moronic self-reporting and firing of Sampson, IU has made awful coaching hires. Awful. Even worse, Dusty May would have been IU’s coach last year if Woody would have done the right thing and stepped down, or if IU’s board would have ****-canned Mike Woodson instead of giving him another year.

No, IU fans aren’t happy at all with Sweet 16’s and we’re all wary but hopeful about Darian DeVries. IU is due for some luck in the coaching department so we’ll see what happens.

I kinda miss Clappy. The memes and gifs were pretty entertaining.

Welcome to the state of opinion with us diehard notre dame football fans. Patiently waiting for something that never comes. But us kentucky basketball fans haven't experienced. Thank the lord.

They were the #1 overall seed in 13. That was last time they were really good. I know they made finals in 01 or 02 vs Maryland .

Sampson would of had them right there with us but IU pres was hyper reactive - still don't know what happened there .

If iu happened here it honestly would be much the same senerio maybe we would be slightly more passionate.

HOWEVER because of the fans it wouldn't happen . We have the most passionate fanbase in CBB. Ffs we fired 2 HOF coaches (well ran off not technically fired) be ausr they had a few bad years in a row.

IU won't happen in Lexi gton

I mean we only had one title from 1959-1995. We very well could’ve become Indiana after Tubby and Billy if not for Cal.

My biggest fear is to become Nebraska football/Indiana basketball.

Louisville was definitely the number 1 overall seed in the tournament that year.

Here it would be.

Notre Dame football hasn't won a title since 1988 and they still have massive fan support. Now granted, they have been to 2 title games last 13 years so not IU level of ineptitude there.

Until all the Boomers die off UK support will stay the same regardless of record. After that I'm not so sure, tradition doesn't seem as important to some of the later generations, at least it seems that way to me
We have gone 13 years without a championship so kids today 18 years old have no clue how good we have been because they have not seen it. We do need a championship to revive the younger generation. You are so right that the later generation don't care as much as us older folks. I'm 79 and I certainly see the enthusiasm nowhere close today as it was even 20 years ago. We need to get ths younger guys a championship .
