What can the athletic director do to improve the play on the field?

Please put any bias's to the side when answering the question. This is an honest question. Regardless of any personal opinions of the AD.

Tyra can’t really do anything. Maybe give BP an ultimatum. Make some changes to your staff or lose your job. That means firing your son. And how about stop being an ******* to your defensive coordinators?

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure if he could fire the assistants himself.

Above is probably the best answer to the question asked in this post, but that's probably not enough to save his job...

As for the bigger question involved in actually replacing Petrino… Even if all of the other monetary amounts listed elsewhere in some other threads are true, the best way of looking at the monetary situation concerning the football coaching position is by comparing the cost of replacing Petrino with the cost of not replacing him.

What’s the cost of not replacing him next year? -- Maybe a loss of 10,000 tickets per game at $60 dollars x 6 games = $3,600,000. Then, there’s CAF donations… my seats are in the Crunch zone at a $100 per seat per year. While other CAF amounts are more, let’s take $100 x 10,000 for another $1,000,000, for a total of $4,600,000. That’s without any concessions money or any other in-game purchases, etc. We can argue about the impact on season ticket sales, more than 10,000, less than 10,000 or whatever, but no matter what it ends up being a substantial amount.

As for the cost of replacing Petrino -- The $4,600,000 amount above would pretty much cover Brohm’s $4M buyout, plus a $1,000,000 increase in salary to $5,000,000 per year for him versus $4,000,000 for Petrino. So, the remaining issue here that impacts a coaching change is Petrino’s buyout… If the buyout is supposed to be paid in one year instead of over three years, would Petrino accept a “Bobby Bonilla deal” (Google Bobby Bo) where he gets maybe $1,500,000 a year for maybe 12-15 years versus $12,00,000 - $13,000,000 in one year. Or maybe Tyra and the ULAA can come up with another way to finance the buyout that greatly reduces the current amount and stretches the impact over a number of years.

I’m sure that Tyra has crunched all the numbers, and I trust that he’ll again do the best thing for UofL athletics. As for all of the other financial issues he inherited, since much of this is a result of what’s gone on over a long period of time, I suggest that he be given longer than one year to totally right the financial ship. A Brohm hiring will bring a lot of renewed energy and be another step in the right direction by Tyra.

Good analysis. I performed a similar one on the premium site using a 10% discount factor to come up with about a six-year payback and assuming the buyout money is 100% paid up front. That's a long return on money spent and during which Petrino's buyout decreases anyway.

It's all moot, however, when you don't have the money in the bank. You don't have Plan A and Plan B...

Unfortunately we didn’t have a Plan A Or Plan B really when we got rid of TJ and CRP, but the bottom line was they had to go, as I think Bobby needs to go at the end of the season.

When you "need" a new car, but can't get a loan, what do you do?

You get the one you have fixed. It's you ONLY option.

U of L is NOT going to chance bankruptcy for athletics. The Pres of the BoT said "there is too much emphasis on athletics". If Bobby doesn't take a deal we can pay, he's here next year.

And if TJ "had" to go, why are we paying him and trying to mend fences?

That's too much sound analysis for one post. I had to read it twice.

I don't wanna get you in trouble, but did you stay in a Holiday Inn last nite?...

The question is, is the fixing more expensive than replacing? What if old paint is so unreliable you miss work frequently and don’t get paid? Those considerations are part of the calculus. But UofL will not go bankrupt if athletics is in a hole. They are financially separate.

It’s unlikely to be pretty. I expected significantly more from Puma Pass as a third year sophomore with his skill set. The big question at this point has to be whether he has the work ethic to put in the time and effort to correct all of the mechanical flaws (inaccurate throws) and mental mistakes he showed this year. He’s looked like a true freshman out there quite a bit of the time.

Need a new QB coach (Stefan LeFors if you can get him or perhaps Dave Ragone as both a QB coach and passing game coordinator) and likely also a new defensive coordinator, again. DC gets full authority to bring in who he wants on his staff.

As far as the DC goes, I would be looking for someone with strong ties to the states of Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Not sure who the DC at UAB is this year, but his defense is one of the very best in all of college football this season.

The problem in keeping Petrino is the players are telling us, in their performance, they don't want to play for this staff. They are begging Tyra to fire the staff. Even if the entire staff was replaced except Petrino do we think Petrino could work with the replacement staff. I can't see it.

You definitely won't see Ragone as QB coach under Petrino. McGee was probably the last guy who wasn't one of Bobby's kids that would work as a QB coach for Petrino.

There's really no options.

Here's how I hope it plays out....it seems unlikely but I think its possible.

I think Petrino knows that EVERYONE in the city of Louisville wants him gone. The administration, the fans, the players....he has no personality or ability to deal with the negative media or fanbase. Its a lot of money, but he has a lot of money.....would he really not consider taking a smaller buyout to not endure 2-3 more years of just abysmal quality of life as far as coaching goes? I mean does anyone on earth think he's going to right this ship? He's going to lose more transfers at the end of the year. If he comes back there's absolutely nothing that would lead anyone to believe things will be better. Is is dumb to think that he might take $8 million? and leave now instead sticking around for another 3 years for $14? Probably....but I dunno.

They are financially separate.
Yes, they are.

But riddle me this. IF FB bankrupted the Athletic Dept, how long do we remain uncompetitive, or I should say how bad to we get, until "sports" balances the books?

Do we let Walz contract expire and go low ball for a young assistant somewhere? McDonnell?

The people who helped build the programs (whales) did not get rich throwing good money after bad.

I'm just saying that if the "Whales" don't fall all over themselves bailing us out of a mess that GRISSOM got us into, we have some serious decisions coming.
