The wrestling team was ranked in the top ten in all five major polls this week, with a high of 6th! If Wrassler's can succeed at NU,why can't the hoops team make it to the Sweet sixteen?

B-ball is a far more competitive landscape to succeed in.

There are 76 D-1 wrestling programs.

347 D-1 basketball programs.

Also I’m guessing wrestling doesn’t have nearly the corruption of b-ball recruiting as it doesn’t have the same big dollars flowing thru.

Because wrestling is a cold weather sport, so northern schools in the Big Ten are wrestling powerhouses.

Just like how, they say, baseball is a warm weather sport, so Northwestern has never made the NCAA Baseball Tournament, but the Big 12, SEC, and ACC conferences have a wealth of good teams every year.

So, Northwestern has had more success in wrestling than in basketball and baseball because they have a built-in regional advantage for wrestling, since it's a cold-weather sport.

When I was in school in 1983, we took second in the Big Ten with Joe Girardi and Mike Huff!

But basketball is indoors?

Men who like to roll around with each other in tights are easier to recruit to Northwestern then inner city or farm boys who can shoot hoop? Our colors are the colors of Barney the dinosaur after all.

I never said basketball is a warm weather sport; only baseball. Northwestern just doesn't have a built-in advantage like they do in wrestling.

Chicago is actually one of the basketball hotbeds, so it's really a shame that Northwestern hasn't been able to tap into this local talent over the years.

Wrestling is indoors. Whether it's cold or warm outside doesn't make a lot of difference. In sports such as baseball and outdoor track and field, it makes a big difference.

Yes, but high school (and college) wrestling is huge in places like Iowa where there isn't much for the kids to do outdoors during January and February, so the kids wrestle and people watch them wrestle. That's why you'll sometimes see Iowa, Iowa St., and Northern Iowa in the wrestling top 10 in the same season. Conversely, in places like El Paso, where I'm originally from, people are golfing outdoors in January and February and nobody gives a crap about wrestling.

So when they (not just me, THEY) say that wrestling is a cold weather sport, that's what they're talking about.

Hey wrassler, since you're up on the grappling stuff, do you know if Mike DeAugustino, who wrestles for Northwestern, is related to the DeAugustinos from Pennsylvania? I see his bio says he's from Florida, but I figure they could have moved down there. "Gus" DeAugustino was a legendary wrestling coach at North Allegheny High in western Pa. for years and also had a great wrestling career at Lock Haven State. He's in the Hall of Fame out here. I got to see him coach one of his sons in the Pa. state tourney in the '70s.

Not sure! But the kid is tough as nails! Already ranked eighth in the country. Plus we have another super tough kid, Chris Cannon, who is undefeated at the weight. Plus, Colin Valdeviez is tough also. Pretty solid team with some good frosh who are redshirting in Chumbly at 49 and Troy Fisher at 74!
