If you could change one rule in football...

what would it be?

Personally, mine would be when the punter kicks the ball out of bounds and the ref arbitrarily picks a spot. I would rather they have to kick in bounds. If it hits in bounds, then bounces out of bounds, it's ok. For some reason, it's a peeve of mine. Plus, I think it would make the game a little more interesting.

What other changes you got?

I don't understand your rule? A punter has to kick it in bounds or what? You do realize some punts are just shanked out and not kicked out of bounds on purpose.

Ban cut blocking, it ruins DL's ankles and knees.

What are you talking about? The officials do not arbitrarily pick a spot, the referee at the point of the kick lines the official on the side lines at the point where the flight of the ball left the field.

One thing I would like to see changed is the replay process. Some of the replays are just stupid.

The overtime rule in college football is horrible. It takes way too long and too much wear and tear on the players. They should play an extra quarter like the pros do on a first to score basis with each team guaranteed one possession. If they want to keep the current system at least require that the teams take possession outside of field goal range. Taking the ball at the 25 makes no sense whatsoever.

No more extra point kicks. Touchdown is worth seven points. If you want, take a point off the board and go for two. It's an untimed, boring play and the game has ballooned to three and half hours to four hours.

No more automatic replays. Coaches get two challenges a half, that should be plenty. Again, four hour games.

I agree, I've been preaching that for a long time. Start at the 40 at least, make the team have to earn their field goal or TD. I'm not sure what percentage of OT games go multiple OT's, but it has to be a significant number of them.

I love the way overtime is in college football.

Thanks. Glad to see I wasn't the only one left scratching his head after reading the OP.

The rule that made a Ky catch in the endzone during either the ul or Vandy game. The receiver caught the ball with the toes of both feet clearly in the endzone. His heels came down out of bounds. They ruled the catch incomplete. Poor.

1. The random nature of replay really bugs me. Needs to be like NFL, where coaches can only have so many challenges, and inside two minutes, etc.. i can't remember how many times UK makes a play and it goes to review...but then what looks like an iffy play going the other way never garners a review. Just put a rule in place of when/how many and be done with it.

2. I have to agree on stopping clock on first downs. With technology the way it is...you can't tell me we have to wait on 60 year old fat dudes to move chains. Digitalize the first down marker process., etc.. but quit giving teams quasi first downs for a first down.

3. Lastly...the targeting penalty is too harsh to kick a kid out of a game for me.

This may not be exactly what the OP was looking for, but, I would like to see the lead official be required to hold a press conference after the game just like the two head coaches. Sometimes they may be able to explain calls that were baffling to the fans and lead to some improved understanding.

The officiating is such a key component to games, I believe there should be some public accountability. Along with this i would suggest a large increase in pay for the officials that prove successful. Make it lucrative to be a good official, but not so much for sucking; you know, like other jobs are supposed to be.

Eliminate play reviews & TV TO's & play a 60 minute game in 2:45. Soccer shows commercials in margins & keeps playing. I really don't see the need for team TO's with all the TV & replay stoppages. OK, let teams have on TO in last two minutes of game.

I would go the other way and make extra points as it was when I played rugby. Whomever scores the TD has to kick the PAT. In other words, your QB sneaks it in ....he is the kicker for the EP. RB....same deal. The WR strikes on a 80 yd TD....WR attempts the PAT. Pick six......CB kicks the EP. Big Boy OL falls on a fumble in the end zone for a TD.....300 lbs of PAT follows. THAT would make the game very exciting. You could still have a kicker on the roster for KO and FG's but average FB players would have to become proficient at short distance kicks......similar to FT in BB.

I have never thought about this but it is great rule. I imagine a lot of people would hate it but I guarantee most people would have loved to see some DL kick an extra point.

When there is a penalty to be assessed against the receiving team on the kickoff following a FG or TD, kick from the normal spot and when the play ends after the run back or touchback then assess the fifteen yd penalty..Even if receiving team runs back the kick for TD ,the ball would be returned to the fifteen for first and ten..

Too many times the kickoff team kicks from the 45 or 50 and kicks it out of the end zone and receiving team is in no worse shape than a normal kickoff.

Agree! OT in college is horrible. Teams get it at the 25 yard line?!?! Are you kidding!?!?

The extra point is basically automatic. I would like to see the ball placed at the 2 yard line for the two point conversion, but at the 25 yard line for the single point PAT.

The automatic first down rule. 3rd and 15, a 5 yard defensive holding call should not result in a first down. Likewise 15 yard personal fouls should not result in AFD's either if you had longer to go.

Pro overtime sucks. Two teams fight so hard during the game to force overtime and chances are that one team may not even get a chance to score to win the game? That makes no sense.

Yes, the ball has to hit in bounds first, otherwise, they have to back it up five yards and kick it again. If they shank it, it's still a penalty.

Outlaw sticky gloves.
You mean we Could have used these? damnit!!!!!!!

Love the idea Cats had on eliminating the automatic first down on personal fouls. Far too many times a marginal PF call like a barely touched late hit on the QB changes games. Have to put some teeth in it to discourage the bad PF plays but the yardage is enough.

Actually like the clock stoppage after first downs because it adds another level of strategy in two minute drill to throw run the ball or throw short if you can move the chains. But would not object to making it only happen in .ast 2 minutes to help shorten game times.

Do not like spot of foul on pass interference because that call is way too easily mis-called and almost always has major impact on games. It's really really hard to cover someone running full speed when they know where they are going but you don't and can't see when the ball is released. I would even eliminate any interference on under thrown balls where the WR stops in front of the defender unless the defender makes no effort to stop and plows over or holds the WR.

Make all replay reviews coaches challenges but expand it to cover pretty much everything. BUT AN UNSUCCESSFUL CHALLENGE IS A 15 YARD UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT PENALTY.

Eliminate OL using their hands in blocking. They must keep their hands in close to their chest and block with their shoulder. Like in the old days (1970's) LOLOL.

I've always hated how linemen downfield can get flagged for being an ineligible receiver when they aren't even targeted.

Also, why are some flinches a false-start and others are brushed aside?

There needs to be a total revamp of the officiating guidelines. Make every officiating crew accountable for their ineptitude. Enough with this, "SEC crew" or "B1G crew" BS. Conference affiliation of referees is complete crap, IMO. Make every crew work under the jurisdiction of a new branch of the NCAA or a third party and have consequences for horribly officiated games/ blown calls. Give them superior training to what they have now. Just make them not suck as much. That's all I ask.
