Be ready with the appropriate response when someone approaches you and says "WE ARE!"

Yesterday, I was on the return ferry from Culebra PR when I spotted a PSU hat. I said loudly "WE ARE" but got no response. I approached the man and said it again in a regular tone. This time he asked me what I said and I repeated it, then he said "oh that, yeah, thanks."

Yes, my first thought was...he didn't go to Penn State. The hat was the first and only college gear I've seen down here.

On another note, no surprise to us in the 222 corridor from Allentown, Reading and Lancaster...everyone we've talked to has family in 1 of those cities or as they say...around the Amish.

I will admit that I am not a fan of the "We Are" greeting when I am out and about. My wife gets annoyed with me because I don't say it to anyone when I see them wearing PSU gear, and if I respond to someone who says it to me, it's clear from my tone that I am disinterested. Most of the time I don't notice when someone says it to me and she has to point it out to me and remind me to say it back. That being said, I love it in the stadium.

Lots of alum here in MD but even so, when I hear it, I get caught of guard and dont always get the reply out

The thing to remember is people are no longer used to interacting with strangers. I don’t take offense if I don’t get a return.

That said, I see Penn Staters everywhere. Whether I’m at the restaurant at the bottom of a Polish salt mine, at the Eagle’s Nest, Tower of London, Marienplatz/Oktoberfest, Neuschwanstein, Zugspitze, Rome, Normandy, Pearl Harbor, cruises, I’ve gotten returns when I say it or have done the latter part of the greeting.

And what do you mean by “if” you wear PSU gear on vacation? It’s an unusual day of I’m NOT wearing PSU gear. I probably have enough tshirts and polos and nice shorts or mesh shorts to make it a couple months in blue and white.

I do wear PSU gear often, but not literally everyday. Usually on days we are traveling and we are going to see a lot of people like at the airport, my wife will tell me not to wear it so I don't have to respond to people.

This last cruise that we went on (Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire) was the first time (literally) that we went on vacation and I didn't get a "We Are" even once.

So last weekend, my wife and I were walking down King Street (main street) in Boone, NC, home of App State. Lots of people and I'm thinking I bet I'll see some PSU merch on somebody.

We walk down the street some more, stop at the sandwich shop at the light and sure enough right on cue -- middle-aged guy with some gray and his PSU hat walks by and stops to look at some merch in one of the windows. I laugh, didn't say a thing to my wife who saw him. I was tempted to say what's your handle on BWI but that would have ruined the day with my dearest.

Them: Go f*cking yourself.

I like this present participle version, Bob! A real reminder to the recipient to practice mindfulness and be in the present moment while one f—ks oneself. I’m gonna use it for sure :)

As for the “We Are” when randomly out and about, I too will admit it feels a little out of place to me outside the context of the stadium. If I spot the person in PSU gear first, I am far more likely to just give them a “Go State!” or “Go Lions!” I prefer not to feel like I’m putting them on the hook for the cheer, especially given the chance they may not even pick up on it.

When someone says "We Are" to me, I cross them up and just reply "Nittany". I did say "We Are" to Saquon and got the "Penn State, man" reply back though.

So much of my wardrobe is blue and white that when I got prescription Wayfarer sunglasses made I went with dark blue frames rather than the traditional black. 😎

When I graduated the “We Are” saying wasn’t really a thing. So people catch me off guard and I usually reply that I’m a Penn Stater, too.

I don’t wear a lot of Penn State gear when I’m out and about including when on vacation and I don’t have a lot of Penn State clothes. Never have worn much PSU stuff over the year, but most days I wear my S hat, usually when taking walks. Living in Columbus for 18 years pretty much cured me of wearing college logo gear since so many people wear Buckeye gear every day there, it became a bit childish to me. I try to avoid unpleasantries such as the time I forgot I was wearing a PSU shirt in the grocery store and some lady dressed in scarlet and gray spied me from across the store and came running over, got right in my face and said in a very demeaning manor “Penn State, Eww!” It was really a WTF moment, but I resisted knocking her to the floor, although I wanted to. This was in FL where we live, mind you, not in Ohio. My wife was absolutely dumbfounded by this.

I actually made a conscious decision to not wear anything PSU on this trip. It's the first time I've ever traveled without anything PSU in my wardrobe. I tried to pack very light for this trip and since it's baseball season I decided to wear Phillies gear in the airport.

It was a typo. I corrected it, then saw that you made a valid point, and finally decided to leave it in its original, erroneous form.

I’m such a dickhead. 😞

‘Preciate your playing along by reverting, Bob. You’re clearly not a dickhead, but a good sport ;)

In those “be right back” moments you could be accused of thinking with your dickhead though. As could many of us.

I can't believe that. That's some weak *** anti-social bull ****. You can't use a playful yet simultaneously endearing benign and yet intimate brief engaging phrase that connects and unites after very likely spending 3+ years of your lives in the precise same academic institution out of thousands you could have both potentially gone to? Dude, that's embarrassing and I didn't even go to Penn State-I'm beyond disappointed to learn you're "that kind of person." I'm shocked you even thought it was prudent to admit that. It's disconcerting that for some reason this little "uniquely rare" instance of fraternization? not sure what the word would be....camaraderie? rapport? causes you to show disinterest or disengagemen or annoyancet. I'm supremely curious as to why-why you would admit it (especially on a PSU message board) is outlandish enough and lacks self awareness, but lets just finish the dying thing off and tell me WHY you would feel that way in public or vice versa or whatever situation happens when you cross a PSU person? Like I would be beyond appreciative if you could type out perhaps one or two sentences that enunciate and or validate why you or ANYONE-especially if they really DID go to PSU to feel and respond the way you do? I'm curious to hear it from your vantage. I want to be fair and see if you can re-frame this sentiment, statement, and purported behavior in a humane and logical way that doesn't paint you as unsavory, surly, and dare I say, rude. I hope a minority of people in general treat each other with more respect than this-ESPECIALLY if they didn't even go to the same school or I am again reminded why we are in so much trouble as a country that's becoming more and more socially fractured and close minded every day. If I saw you were wearing PSU garb that was easily visible and I clearly threw you a "We Are" and you responded like I was annoying you. I would think you were a creep.

A few people threw up on the way over, including my Brother-in-law but we made it. Yes, I really enjoyed Flamenco Beach and Culebra! Flamenco was one of the nicest beaches I've been to and I've been to some beauties in Hawaii and The Caribbean. There's a really good chance that we retire in PR in 6-9 years (probably Camuy or Hatillo area).

My wife an I honeymooned in Culebra. Loved the place. We were married in December and the Dewy was all decked out for Christmas. Easily the best vacation we have been on.
