In the old days you threw the ball on the seams...

Check this photo out. Baker is throwing from the top of the ball. I've noticed this type of ball hold evolve over the years. It just looks awkward to me, but whatever works, works for me. Maybe we can deflate....Ha.

Yeah, everyone has their own style.
Hell, as I recall Terry Bradshaw put his index finger on the tip, (the four corners).
He said that gave it a little more velocity.

Come to think of it, he could laser that bastard pretty good.

I used a similar grip with much less success. But my little finger and ring finger were on the laces.

If they're open quick, a lot of guy toss it without worrying about seam location. Just get it out of there.

Aikman had a lot of trouble with wet footballs, because he often three without any laces contact of any kind.

I kind of figured you would have something to say about his "tosh cushion".

It's a fact.
All right hand passers throw with a right hand rifling of about 3 to 1.

I was a long snapper on punts in high school. I absolutely had to have my index fingers on the seam. That's what gave me the tight spiral. The twisting motion on take off.............

You're right, unless you have freakishly large hands, you almost have to have the actual laces under your fingertips to get the spin you mentioned.
But that's me.
Veteran of many sandlot games.
Even a couple in a mud bog.
That's more fun than a tomato fight. (almost)

You still see the snappers adjust the ball today. You just don't see the q-b's adjust to the seam. I just thought it was curious....something to pass the time until Tulsa.

Or we could talk about drones and sluts..........

Or, since I feel this could be an all skate, and you mentioned Tulsa,
the Pentagon announced a new warship, the second with the name USS Tulsa.

I only have sketchy info, but it's around 400 and some odd feet long, primarily for coastal patrols.
Neat!

Hand size is the reason for varied grips. I also think the gun snaps and hurry-up offenses have made the coaches tell them to just get the ball out ASAP and don't worry about the seams.

I used that same style of throwing the football.

Back in '82, I used to be able to throw a pigskin a quarter mile.

I can throw a football over a mountain. Yeah... if Coach would have put me in the game in the fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind.

One thing I noticed about Mayfiled. He throws with a tremendous amount of heat on the ball. Some of the passes, I thought were thrown too hard for the distance required. I believe it led to at least one INT. Maybe it was just this one game. It'll be interesting to see him throw this year. I'll be watching to see if he displays a touch on his throws when required.

BTW, I'm not ragging on him and wasn't even going to mention it until I saw the image. He played a helluva game.

We might of all gotten a little spoiled with Sam.

That guy could throw a beam, or he could lob it.
He had a touch on the ball that was magic.
