The show broadcast on Sunday, was a story of the roots of the JJ's relationship, and that they roomed together because Coach Broyles roomed guys alphabetically.
Of course there were several references and pics of Barry Switzer. Barry and former UT hc Fred Akers were the coaches of the Arkansas freshman team when Jimmy and Jerry were first year guys. There was an interesting quote by Jerrah, quoting Frank Broyles as saying that in all his years in Fayetteville, he'd recruited two players who were geniuses: Johnson and Switzer. Both were assistants while I was an OU student. Barry took over as HC in the spring of my senior year. Coach Broyles statement to Jerrah was likely a large factor in Jerrah's choosing Barry as Jimmy's successor.
And he said that when he called Barry to ask if he'd like to be the Cowboys' coach to succeed Coach Johnson, that when Barry got there, the first thing he wanted to tell them was that they were too smart to screw up what they had. But Jimmy had already left. Both gave a lot of credit to Jim Mackenzie as a brilliant defensive coach when they were Razorback players. There was also a picture of two of Larry Lacewell as a Arky assistant coach when they were players.
But the most interesting cameo was when they were praising Broyles for his teaching of values as a coach, and caring about his players, despite being pretty much a CEO coach, who let his assistants do their jobs. They then showed a still picture of Broyles posing apparently with a recruit while looking at an Arkansas practice. Good looking kid. I guess that's why the recruit pic they chose, was eventual Sooner stud, Joe Wylie.
I missed the first ten minutes. A large part of the show was the detailing of Arkansas' 1964 football national title. Both AP and UPI chose Bama, with the voting before the bowls. But Arkansas had won in Austin 14 -13, and when the Horns beat the Crimson Tide in the Orange Bowl, the Football Writers' Association and one other end of the season poll gave the NC to Arkansas, who was the only undefeated team at the end of the year. Arky barely beat Nebraska 10-7 in the Cotton Bowl. The Huskers had been undefeated until OU beat them in Norman the last game of the season, in Gomer's first year.
Seeing the Joe Wylie pic brought back old memories.
