I have been giving this a lot of thought and I think it is now Ohio State or Oklahoma State…

No. Iowa is irrelevant, and will continue to spiral downward. tOSU will provide some good competition. OSU and VT will make things more interesting.

But, in my opinion, the main rivalry for our guys will be against their teammates for world team and Olympic spots. However, they know that when they come here, and embrace that challenge (or enter the portal when they realize they are not the alpha dog).

Hey, @mcpat, a poll seems to be beckoning your creativity
lol. Would be a good poll idea. But I’d like to see the discussion play out first.

It’s a good question. In the near future, I see Okie St as the team presenting the biggest challenge, including on the recruiting trail and at World Team trials. That prob makes them our biggest rival. Although I understand the argument that we don’t dual against them.

I think “rival” is bigger than biggest threat. Only Iowa has their own thread(s) on our board, and the history of so many big moments. With Ohio State we have the dual of the century and Bo Nickal’s fall in the final to clench the championship. But it just seems that PSU’s rise and surpassing Iowa as”the” team keeps them as our biggest rival. And of course, HR is always there to provide fuel to the fire in a way Bucknuts never does.

Hard to find a true rival.

You need to go back to 2021 to find another team that won the NC. You need to go back to 2020 to find a team that beat us in a dual.

In both cases, that team was Iowa. Until someone else actually beats us at something, Iowa is the closest rival we have.

Iowa is the most hated opponent, but I’d argue we’re a team without a rival right now.
You can’t score 3 points in a dual and be considered a rival.
That's an excellent take. It's like some of our football fans insisting PSU and OSU are football rivals. Nope, we haven't done our part in developing that into a football rivalry. TnT aren't doing their part to build a wrestling rivalry with PSU.

Thank God neither program is anything resembling our basketball team where Bucknell is the closet thing we have to a rivalry.

Definitely the Cowboys . . . ah, but the ones from Wyoming, the only team to score 7 points against us. Hawks have averaged 5.7 per dual the past three years. Home-and-homes with a team in a state with grizzlies, wolves, two fabulous National Parks, the Wind River Range and the majestic Tetons is my kind of rival! ;)

IOWA was our biggest rival except for one year when Ohio State stepped in and one year where Michigan did the stepping in. Ohio State is this years' biggest Rival. I sense that Oklahoma State will be our biggest rival with Ohio State and Virginia Tech taking turns jumping in as contenders for the spot of most serious contender. PSU will be the favorites for the next 4 years at minimum. Book it.

DT will have those Pokes planted firmly as the number 2 program in short order. The RTC and the fact that he can actually coach wrestlers up will allow him to pass Iowa and tOSU. He has a long way to go to become a real threat to Cael. I think Iowa will keep the rival tag as the rabid fan base will keep it alive. Iowa fans have no equal in unfounded optimism. It is the gift that keeps giving. They are the only program where a couple of mid level guys Bob buys from the discount bin can spark visions of world dominance.

I keep hoping Lehigh is able to up their game to challenge PSU on a regular basis. That's a great rivalry with a lot of respect between the two schools.
I have been a Lehigh fan forever. "A rising tide lifts all boats" I was certain Lehigh would be the program that would benefit from the rising tide known as Cael. I admit I have been tremendously disappointed.

Not sure where to put this but figured this thread would work. You can say what you want about the Brands but I love having them involved with the sport. I think their mindset is outdated and they haven’t been able to evolve but damn are they both characters. I truly enjoy listening to them even if I don’t agree with a lot of it. The passion is contagious

The part I really took away was where one of the twins said that “without winning my life means little”. I think they absolutely believe that and it pushed them to be great but what a ****** way to go through life. That is about as far from what Cael and Co teach as possible and likely one of the main reasons the programs are where they are

Kind of tough to call Okie State a rival when we at best meet at a couple weights at nationals.
Ohio State is a natural rival, but in reality they aren't the rival.
Iowa is that team. However, they have become as much of a threat as Lehigh. Lehigh is still a wrestling rival, kind of.
We really don't have a wrestling rivaly. Has to be someone in our conference that we play all the time to be considered. Closest Iowa then OSU. Maybe our own wrestlers???

The posts about opposing teams I read here I say 83% are about Iowa so that should answer the question

We don’t talk about Iowa because they’re a rival. We talk about them because it’s satisfying to watch a former bully lose all his lunch money.

It’s not a rivalry, it's an autopsy. And the cutting must continue until we get to the rotten core.

Ever watch the scene in the Christmas story when ralphy loses it on the bully?

Ralphy is college wrestling and the bully is Hawkeye fans.

So our rival is the rest of the world. Ok, seems fair. I like it.

I wonder if Cael had the vision that Happy Valley would one day be the de facto National Training Center??? Not just a perennial contender in college wrestling, but the best single room on the planet?
