Is Mark Pope our version of Matt Doherty?

I can't take full credit for this comparison, I saw it posted a couple weeks ago, I can't remember who posted it, but I'm afraid it's true, I feel like Pope can’t do this job. He’s too soft and he is not good at adjusting.

This sucks, because I really like Mark and his family, he's a great guy, but this was probably the wrong hire.

Absolutely the wrong hire. Zero NCAAT wins coming here. Mediocre teams. Not made for it.

Doherty built the core of UNC's 2005 championship roster.

If another coach came in and took a team built around Moreno, Johnson, and, I don't know, let's say Jelavic, to the final, then yes.

The fabric of the game has changed dramatically since those days. Pope came here and he didn't have a team lol

If Pope wants this to turn around and have a long tenure here, he's going to have to drop the quirky, overly kind, soft act and bevome a hard nosed coach that demands perfection.

He has stunk this year. We are not in a "beautiful space right now".
The act is who he is. The other you describe he doesn’t have it

My point is, Matt Doherty wasn’t winning anything of note. He didn't have the chops for it, or the coaching experience.
This team has plenty of pieces. a real coach wins this game and at least makes other two losses much more competitive.
Mark Pope is too soft and goofy to do this.

I think it may have been me that said he could be our MD. It was always my fear. I felt like that press conference was a mass brainwashing and now we are coming out of the haze

Matt Doherty is not a "great guy." He fired a lot of office staff when he got the UNC job. He treated the players like ****. There was a full on player mutiny.

There is a reason Doh hasn't been able to keep a job over the last 25 years. No matter what field he tries, he ultimately fails. Coaching, radio, business... fail, fail, fail. Being a decent human being... fail.

Ha yeah. He was ousted for the exact opposite personality reasons.

Doherty is a fairly talented guy but simply way too arrogant and volatile to last anywhere. Like someone said, Roy’s 2005 title team was mostly crazy Doherty’s players so he could recruit. Ironically those same players and their threatened mutiny caused his departure in 2003.

Probably why all of the killer type freshmen studs said no to us. They want to dominate, they want to be coached by winners and proven coaches, not told how enlightened they are or how special their soul is.

I wonder what Bruce Pearl is up to these days? Does he still have a boat and a nice barbecue setup? Asking for a friend.
