Interesting that they chose him for GM.Figure he'll go to NC State since Andrew Slater was so high on him. One thing will be interesting with Slater now working as GM at NC State. We'll get to see if he was a guy who was just great with connections in terms of getting info or if he really knows anything about evaluating players. He had gassed up Mgbako big time when he was a recruiting "Guru".
This will be the "Show Your Work" part for Bart Simpson in Jordans--now Adidas gear.
name the last mcdonalds all american who was willing to be on a college teams 3rd stringHopefully Pope can land him for depth.
Starting Dioubate at the 4?I‘d rather we focus on adding another backcourt guard after losing Lewis. I’m now pretty content with our frontcourt guys.
Who is "some random duke commit who didn't deserve to be at MCD game but was chosen because of who he committed to"?name the last mcdonalds all american who was willing to be on a college teams 3rd string
Marcus Lee? He was McD AA who didn't seem to mind spending most of his career as a third or even fourth string big behind the likes of Dakari, KAT, WCS, Randle, etc.name the last mcdonalds all american who was willing to be on a college teams 3rd string
Wade used to work at Duke's Basketball Camp.Interesting that they chose him for GM.
probably someone on Alabama football team. I mean am I right.name the last mcdonalds all american who was willing to be on a college teams 3rd string
He’d be second stringname the last mcdonalds all american who was willing to be on a college teams 3rd string
I hope notStarting Dioubate at the 4?
Why? He’s the only 4 on the roster so I’d bet he’s starting.I hope not
Who does UK have that is a better four?Starting Dioubate at the 4?
I think Garrison gets the start there. I just think that is why he seems to be staying after all.Who does UK have that is a better four?
I could see him starting if he makes a jump; otherwise MD is a better player.I think Garrison gets the start there. I just think that is why he seems to be staying after all.
Well, the season will likely begin with both starting …Garrison at the 5 and Dioubate at the 4.I think Garrison gets the start there. I just think that is why he seems to be staying after all.
Also, I expect Noah IF he gets minutes to play small ball 4. The minutes are really tight all the way around. Honestly Lewis leaving opened the door for more Jasper minutes assuming we bring in another shooter. We can’t sign everyone.
It’s basic math.
There’s only 40 minutes a position.
Only five positions on a team.
Where are y’all getting the minutes to add all these guys?
If Garrison is back, Quaintance is healthy, we have Moreno coming in and we’ve got Dioubate coming in, and those four are playing the 4 and 5 spots, then that’s 80 minutes divided by four players equals 20 minutes each. (Quaintance, if healthy and as good as advertised, plays a little more. Moreno, being just a Freshman, may play a little less.)
Where are the minutes for Mgbako coming from? He is going to take minutes away from the guys we already have committed.
If Pope adds everyone we think he needs to add, then guys will start to realize their minutes are getting cut and will jump ship.
We only have a finite amount of minutes. We can’t stockpile talent.
If we add someone to the frontcourt it will likely be a developmental player. Someone who doesn’t expect many minutes, likely because they aren’t good enough to play many minutes.
We probably aren’t signing another top portal 4 or 5 man unless someone is leaving or decides not to come.
Just do the math.
If Quaintance is healthy, he starts at the 5. Moreno and Garrison will back him up.Well, the season will likely begin with both starting …Garrison at the 5 and Dioubate at the 4.
As for which one moves to the bench when Quaintance (presumably) gets healthy and back to full strength? I suspect that will depend upon which one is playing better at the time.
Exactly. Also, I expect Noah IF he gets minutes to play small ball 4. The minutes are really tight all the way around. Honestly Lewis leaving opened the door for more Jasper minutes assuming we bring in another shooter.
I think Proctor is a good talent to be a complementary starter but he can’t lead a team to a title as the only PG as we witnessed. I agree on Mgbako 100% and always thought that. I always wondered how a team with Wagner, him, and Bradshaw could not be dominate. It turned out both Bradshaw and Mgbako were overhyped. DJ to some degree but he’s a way higher end college player IMHO.Wade used to work at Duke's Basketball Camp.
He's well connected but that is part of the job-you have to identify talent and some of his commentary on guys is very interesting. I mean you'd have thought Duke had commitments from top 5 picks in Mgbako/Proctor when they landed them. My friend was at same Nike Hoop Summit when they committed and shared how overhyped/overrated both were as CBB and NBA prospects. Slater had been pushing for Mgbako to be #1 in the class. Let's not forget Naas Cunningham (imagine NC State may be involved here too) and hype he'd received from Bart in Jordans.
Best thing I can tell Slater about the Adidas line--don't get Ant's shoes--all the players who wear them stop the game 100x to have to lace them up again. Shoes are always coming untied.
Williams is so talented that it may even be a challenge to get Chandler a lot of minutes! I’m with you, just don’t see any room for Mbako. Wilkerson you definitely make room for since that is a position of need (pure shooter).Exactly.
Lewis saw that he was getting pushed further down the depth chart with Lowe coming in and Pope looking for a wing shooter. He knew Johnson was the primary reserve at the 1-2 spot and he was looking at the scraps.
Like with the 4 and 5 spots, there are only so many minutes at the 1-3 spots.
Lowe is going to get his at the 1.
Oweh is getting his at one wing spot.
Wilkerson or whoever we get gets his at the other wing spot.
Johnson is getting his. He will get starter minutes whether he starts or not. He is a potential OAD talent. He will play. And he is versatile enough to play the 1-3 spots.
Then you’ve got Chandler and Williams.
Six guys fighting for 120 minutes. That’s 20 minutes per game each. Oweh, Lowe, Johnson, and Wilkerson (or whoever) will get a little more and Chandler and Williams will be fighting for what is left.
Perry is back to an emergency player. Noah will probably only see the floor as a small ball 4 (which is why Pope said he wanted him to add muscle).
So something like this:
PG Lowe(25)/Johnson(15)
SG Wilkerson(25)/Johnson(10)/Chandler(5)
SF Oweh(25)/Williams(10)/Chandler(5)
Even looking at that, Williams and Chandler will be in a full on battle for minutes at the 2-3. It might end up being one of them gets pushed to the bench, so the other can get more minutes.
This is why I can’t understand people saying we need another this and another that. I know people are scared that injuries will bite us, but you can’t expect these players to sit around and wait until someone gets hurt.
Our 1996 Title team had 9 players that went pro. The more the merrier. Makes for better competition in practice.Exactly.

Proctor and Mgbako were talked about as 1 and done talent at Nike Hoop Summit by Simpson in J's and one guy reclassified (Proctor) to help Duke out. Proctor is now deciding whether to stay or enter the Portal. Don't even the think the NBA is on the table for him at this point. Mgbako--well we have talked about him.I think Proctor is a good talent to be a complementary starter but he can’t lead a team to a title as the only PG as we witnessed. If Proctor entered the portal I’d honestly like to snag him. He’s a good shooter and we are much weaker this year in that. If he played his role he would be a decent pickup. I didn’t like his end of game decisions in Dukes loss but he’s was pretty good. As long as he didn’t make late game decisions I’d be fine with him.Proctor and Mgbako were talked about as 1 and done talent at Nike Hoop Summit by Simpson in J's and one guy reclassified (Proctor) to help Duke out. Funny thing about that NJ Scholars team--they were better when it was just Bradshaw/DJ and then Mgbako came and joined them and they were "meh" the rest of the Summer.
Different times, my friend. Would be great if Pope could convince a former Final Four starter to redshirt after a few games like Pitino did with Prickett. Or have a 7 foot project come in and play on a JV team like Mohammad did. You see that happening in the portal era?Our 1996 Title team had 9 players that went pro. The more the merrier. Makes for better competition in practice.
Hell no, rosters back then were stacked and you could hide guys and get them to do that. Now everyone wants a check and minutes even at SW Missouri State to show off for next portal season.Different times, my friend. He can certainly shoot the ball. I’m with you not sure I’d want him running the offense but he’s a sniper from long range. If Proctor entered the portal I’d honestly like to snag him. I don't know about starting! He was specifically brought in to start at the 4 spot.
