Is Pope running the same offense as last year?

We were a pleasure to watch last year and Pope’s BYU teams as well, at least on the offensive side, but this year is the complete opposite. Is it that the new players are not adjusting, that we can’t shoot and that impacts things, or has something changed from a coaching standpoint? Pope didn’t forget how to coach over the summer. Maybe somebody more knowledgeable can fill me in.

No, we're not running last year's offense. I'm not sure what we're running, but Zoom action has left the chat.

OP, we are certainly trying to. Unfortunately, the good teams are able to effectively take us out of our offense. Why? They can go under on virtually every zoom action. Simple as that. The zoom action works when the players are dynamic enough to cut around the DHO for cuts, step back (for under reads) and shoot, or have the playmaking chops to find others who have cut or received a look from gravity forced from the defense having to gap in and help on the action. This is why we usually start in our patented 5-out zoom, get literally nothing out of it for a few plays, then players start trying to throw things to a wall and see what sticks. I don’t know what the solution is either, because we have virtually one player who can make a shot right now and there isn’t an “offense” you can run that will fix that with our personnel. Factor also into this that you could at least generate some more offense if the trigger man was a faster “processor”. Between Moreno and BG, neither make the reads fast enough to punish the defense when there is some separation. Unless some guys emerge as shooters, this offense is going to struggle.

I agree with this. We are not running the offense. Any kind really. We are attempting, it appears, to run the same as last year’s but being stopped and there’s no plan B.

The offense would certainly work better with a healthy Lowe. Will that happen?

Lowe doesn’t help the defense. Might even make it worse?

But JQ would change the defense.

Getting both would completely change this team.

How much change is the question.
