I know it still early and a lot left to do, but I can't remember him getting as much out his guys considering his every shorting bench? So I pose the question what are the best 3 coach K coaching years and rank them?

3) 86 first time for him as a nationally prominent team went 37-3. A true barn storming year played all comers...just a little too tired at the end.
2) torn between last year 15, Actually winning with a freshman dominated team...think of all those who have failed in that endeavor fab 5, many Kentucky teams, few do it. And 93 making it to the finals was amazing after what was supposed to be a down year and all the "repeat" fatigue.
1) This year?

^ You mean 1994, not 1993 - that season ended in the Sweet Sixteen to Jason Kidd's Cal team.

'94 was amazing, it was Grant & four average role players. Almost beat a stacked Ark team.

this year is definitely up there so far just to have kept these guys playing with so much passion even when they were so down.

I think 2010 was a great coaching performance. That was really one of the first times he really saw that he had to adjust the defense drastically to the ability of his players. Playing that pack it in man D was HUGE that year. And the way he subbed that year was great!

Last year was great as well. The way he adjusted after Sheed left and the complete turnaround the defense made

It's one of his best IMO.

Years I can think of ...1994 with that Grant Hill lead team that lost to Arkansas...2010 getting that team to win a NC...2015 with a bunch of freshmen...this year..any others I'm not thinking of?

I personally thought 94 or 2010 was amazing..but what he's done with this squad giving the injuries is remarkable..

2010 and 1994 for me too. Grant was a monster that year. Singler, Scheyer, and Smith in 2010 with rebounding machine in Zoubek were fun to watch.

Two threads going on this ("Coach K"), if a mod wants to consolidate.

I posted this in the other thread:
Off the top of my head, 1987, 2000, the late season adjustments in 2001, and 2010 stand out to me as other candidates. Respectively, a young coach loses 4 seniors and makes it back to the Sweet 16, loses 4 key players (including Duke's first 3 early NBA entries ever) and finishes regular season #1 and ACC Champs, loses Boozer to injury and completely revamps style, and adjusts to alarmingly unathletic personnel and wins 4th title.

And this one deserves consideration already, I'd say. 2010 and 2015 are good years to compare it to. In 2010, we had a veteran team but only had 3 true guards. In addition to adjusting our style (most notably playing a more conservative style of D), psychologically he refused to tell that team they were great. They were mature and secure enough to take that as a challenge. This year, we're young and a little fragile, and he has really talked them up, praising their effort and showing a patience and tolerance where he has often exhibited a stern force of will. Last year we also had a bunch of freshmen in key roles, but they were OAD good and he hasn't coached this team the same way, despite similar profiles regarding age.

And even just on its own, w/o comparisons that show K's genius for adjustment, he has taken a hobbled team w/ no depth and glaring weaknesses and made it work. Losing 4 out of 5 could have snowballed far worse, but we're now on a 5-game winning streak, including 3 in a row over teams ranked well above us.

I thought the 97 team performed exceptionally well in the regular season. Duke won the regular season title over UNC-led Jamison/Carter and Wake's Tim Duncan. McLeod and Langdon were the only guys to even play in the NBA and neither one lasted very long.

Questions like this, that require you to look back on K's amazing career, really make you stop and appreciate the unbelievable things this man has done. Duke fans are incredibly lucky.

This is a very difficult question to name his top 3, just cause of the 3rd one. But it's not that hard to name the top 2 IMO cause 2010 and 2015 we won Natty Titles and both were mind boggling that we did and its unreal that K didn't win COY in both....any other coach takes those 2 teams and wins the title, their COY hands down. 2010 was K's best imo

I think this isn't even his best coaching year of the last two years, let alone his best coaching year ever.

Last year... He. Went. Zone.
And won.

But far be it from me to piss on anyone's cheerios after last night's win. So if you think this year might be his best ever, then that's OK by me!

Well, I didn't see it, but considering the roster, 1994 has to be up there.

For me, 2009-10. Man those boys exceeded expectations to achieve something remarkable.

Not this year - at least not yet. A long way to go, still. He has really toughened up the team mentally though. I think 2010 was a great coaching job b/c of the way he got every player to fulfill his role. And 1994 was also a great year with lesser talent.

But, I think 1991 was as good as any if not the best. Everyone looks to lesser talented Duke teams. But, Duke had never won a title. They had been to 4 FF's and were annihilated by a great UNLV team the year before by 30! Then, in a great upset they defeated UNLV in the national semis. Yet, K was adamant on the floor immediately after that huge upset that his players not celebrate - they still had one more game. And, then, they beat Kansas in the final to get over the hump and end the "K can't win the big one" talk.

To me, that's his best coaching job even though he had very good players. But, they still had a lot of youth for the time. Hurley was only a sophomore. Hill a freshman.

2010 was by far the best in my eyes. Coach K and Duke were on a serious decline. Earlier that season Duke got destroyed by Georgetown and a couple of other teams. They were called alarmingly unathletic by numerous so called experts. They became the defensively disciplined team I ever saw. And Lance Thomas was the best pick and roll defender I have ever seen. He was incredible at hedging ball handlers and back side help.
