OK gang, I am looking for some optimism.
Chris Collins is the 3rd basketball coach in Northwestern history to coach the team for eight or more seasons.
The two previous coaches, Dutch Lonborg and Bill Carmody suffered poor seasons in their 8th year.
Dutch was en fuego earlier, but his team in 1935 went 4-8 in conference. But, he stayed with it and his 9th NU team in 1936 went 7-5 in conference that began a 5-year run of 30-30 in conference play. Now, 30-30 isn’t great shakes, but not so bad...particularly given our history.
Coach Carmody ended a dreadful 7th and 8th seasons coaching the ‘Cats. His teams were 3-31 in conference play those two years. Saved by having no athletic director in place at the end of that 8th season, Carmody rallied the troops to go 8-10 in conference in his 9th year at the helm. That began a remarkable 4-year run going 30-42 in conference play and making the NIT each of those four years.
OK, Coach Collins. Year 9 is an important one. Let’s make it work!
