I was looking around the internets at some skills videos on players and this one is from Denton TX shooting guard has a parent promoting, dare I say already giving, a verbal to Coach Cal.

Hopefully Cal will still be around to coach him.

It's recommended for 5-8 ur olds to play on 8 ft rims with a 27.5 ball, and 9-10 yr olds to play on 9 ft rims with a 28.5 ball. This helps promotes and teaches kids to shoot with proper form instead of heaving the ball towards the rim. We play our rec. leagues like this, but we play on 10 ft goals on weekends during travel ball.

I disagree. I am not sure of any 7-8 yo league in Louisville that plays less than 10 foot goals. Even the 5-6 ages play on 8.5 ft goals. 9 foot for a 9yo is a joke.

You're disagreeing with Cal, Pitino, K, Knight and many other coaches who say to do this. I agree that if a kid can shoot with proper form on a 10 ft goal then they need to, but not all kids can. It's about development.

With all due respect...The YMCA? That is where you send your 4yo to go stand on the dots. This is Kentucky. Kids above the age of 5 do not play at the YMCA other than soccer.

You mentioned Google. Try CSAA (Catholic Schools Leagues) 3rd 4th coincides with 9-10. (Most leagues are on even year pairings not 8-9. There are several other leagues in town which are run by various civic groups. Try J-Town or Fern Creek. Those are probably the largest in the area. At 7-8 they are 10' goals.

Further there is a reason for this. Most facilities do not have adjustable goals. Leagues use High School floor for the most part and JCPS does not make a practice of having adjustable goals. PLUS the break away rims have issues with the weight of the drop-in goals. After a few misses that hit the front of the rim the goal will do its job.

I dont feel the need to concede on this because I am VERY familiar with the issue.

On edit: I did not feel it necessary to mention youth leagues at Hoops or Mid American because both of those typically cater to AAU type preformed teams etc.... and they would go out of business using the Y's rules. They play pretty much KHSAA rules from 1st grade up with some tweaks.

From CSAA to the ones I mentioned above PLUS probably even Upwards which is a religious based league that fits in between the Y and the above...I believe they even play 10' at 8yo. Maybe an Upward Parent can confirm their rules...but I can say that the more "competative rec" players are on 10' with either the Jr 27.5 ball or 28.5 ball at 8yo at 10'.

Do I think it would be better to use 9' for an 8yo? Different issue. IF you have adjustable goals and not those horrible drop in goal....then I would go 9' and 28.5 ball. Lacking that as is the real world....10' with a 27.5 ball is totally fine.

I have no link. Work with a recreation dept. and when we go to conferences they have shown videos that those coaches say this. As for Cal he talked about it at his summer camps to the kids. I fully support it for rec. leagues and such, but if you play weekend travel ball you better be able to play on a 10 ft. rim.

I hear you. And if you or I were D1 coaches who make millions of dollars a year and play in state of the art facilities....I'd say the same thing. It is, in a vacuum, better that a 8yo shoot at a 9' rim with a womens or Jr sized ball.

But the REALITY of the situation is that rec ball and school league ball are played in public facilities that do not have goals that lower. So that is why that video shows games played with a drop-in goal. Coach Cal would change his mind if he knew the way leagues have to go to accommodate a 9' or lower rim. Those goals are less than ideal, change the floor condition because now the out of bounds line is much farther back once you've added a goal in a goal. IMO they also are dangerous.

I'd been to little kids (5-6) games where they had a parent standing there with a broom handle to pop the drop in goal back into place because the 10' break away rim kept breaking away.

So if Cal and the other coaches in your videos would donate millions of dollars to retrofit all of the goals out there in public facilities so that they can adjust mechanically down to 9' or so....then their "wish list" of rules could be implemented. But with the real world dynamics of actual court setups at most gyms......you will be forced to see 7 and 8 yo boys who are shooting a 27.5 at a 10' goal.

I had seen a small child in India that was born with 6 arms. But a boy with 5 feet? Where would he go to buy shoes?

I absolutely despise the buddy goals. They are dangerous and more trouble than what they're worth. We are lucky enough here that the 3 gyms we play our youth reg leagues in that the goals are adjustable.

I agree with you 100%. You are fortunate having the adjustable goals. Those typically are quite a bit more expensive up front. And you better not lose the handle that "screws" the thing up and down. I've even seen some of the "big box" facilities that can raise or lower the goal height with the push of a button. If every facility had those then I would agree that you'd find the 8yo and younger groups playing on 9'.

As for 9-10 (3rd 4th) I would disagree with the lower goal height. 28.5 and 10' is totally fine there.
