Spending a couple of weeks this summer in Italy (flying into Rome) and then Barcelona (flying out). Looking to spend a little over a week in Italy and then fly out of Venice to Barcelona.

Any suggestions on places to visit/see? Things to do?

I stayed down in southern Italy by Catania. The sicilian women are fantastic ally beautiful. Mt. Etna is a site to see and very active right now.

Humblebrag....but for Italy, it's acceptable.

Vernazza, San Gimignano

Rome: must go to Trestevere for Caccia e Pepe and Giolitti for gelato. If you don't, you're an idiot.

Florence: la Giostra.

Vernazza,
Was great, along with whole Cinque Terre, till it was found. Now you can't hardly move. Stayed in one of the harbor front buildings on the town square that's featured in all the Vernazza photos. Great place.

In a week+, can't go wrong with the Italy Big Three: Rome, Florence, Venice. Then again, could spent a month there. My favorite country to visit.

Barçelona: If you don't go to the Sagrada Familia, then you didn't go to Barça. Other Gaudi buildings & park great too. Walking Las Ramblas is great people watching. Old town & tapas bars there are fun. Go to Picasso Museum also. Beaches good. I thought the old train station was gorgeous.

I'd spend 11 days Italy, 3 in B. I could do it tomorrow.

Underrated: Trieste. If you go, head over to Caffe San Marco...you can actually hear real, live, intellectual and philosophical discourse without the talking over and yelling that passes for such here.

Went to Barcelona over Thanksgiving as my kid was invited to train there for a week for soccer.

Great city. Visit Plaza Real (pronounced Ree Alll). Great food/shopping/street entertainment.

Go to plaza de la sagrada familia. Really cool.

If you are into soccer catch a La Liga game if they are playing. RCD Espanyol is easy to get tix, but you will likely be in the off season. Warning, no alcohol served at those games.

Have fun.

Pompeii is definitely worth the train ride in my opinion.

Gelato, Gelato and more Gelato.

Watch out for groups of kids walking up to show you a newspaper or something similar. The little bastages will have even shorter kids sneak up and pick your pocket with your view blocked.

Do not buy any electronics from the back of a car, you will get a block of wood. ;)

Somebody mentioned Naples. Armpit of the world. But I did get to meet Humpty Dumpty there on one trip. True icon.

An old Navy joke..... Why is Italy shaped like a boot? You can't get that much crap in a shoe.

All kidding aside. I think you will enjoy Italy. I spent time there on several occasions in the 80s and 90s. I think a tour guide in Rome is a good investment.

I have a picture of my Father on R&R in Trieste. Been to Italy three times, but never made it over there. I may go in '18 again and will have to make a special trip over to Trieste.

Pompeii is amazing. They have two bodies from the aftermath of the volcano sealed in glass that are petrified. Seeing how the city functioned is awesome. I'm a history buff and love stuff like that.
