I'll take ESPN's side over Clay Travis'. It's not about offending anyone, it's about trying to avoid the inevitable "hur hur, Robert Lee is still in Charlottesville" jokes people like Clay Travis would be making.

Yes because every time a terrorist attack happens we have to remove mentions of Muhammad ali..bc that would be a laugh riot if not. But maybe you missed it...they are being laughed at hysterically now. Hopefully they don't pull any statues in Pennsylvania as that's where the guy was switched to work...how will we ever avoid the jokes..might as well never work in the south again...someone may crack a joke.

No, it's bc ppl are too sensitive. Let's call it what it is. Considering a william and Mary vs Virginia football game will be viewed by all of 10 ppl...i doubt, just like statues, no one would have even noticed until they were told they needed to be sheltered

I wonder if another Leopold Lodewijk Filips Maria Victor would have had a hard time announcing soccer.

ESPN has come out with another statement saying they were concerned about jokes and memes..lol nice try espn.

Aren't you the same network that has a Saturday football program in the fall with tons of college kids outsourcing jokes on poster boards behind the panel, but now you are worried about memes.

ESPN weren't the ones to release the information, we could have went our whole lives without knowing who was originally going to call the Virginia/W&M game.

Someone on the inside leaked information to Clay f'n Travis and he saw his opportunity to blow it up and spark feaux outrage to promote himself. TS.

Makes you wonder if there's a dude out there named Steve Hitler who could have crushed it in his selected field but for his unfortunate name.

I once brought this up with a group. That not every Hitler should be tarnished by one bad apple. We later went to a restaurant and when they asked name of party I said Hitler. It got some laughs and some double takes when they announced Hitler Party. I went back to Donner after that.

This stuff is silly. I doubt every Jesus is an angel.

Then you have about as much sense as they do. I get it, it's hard to agree with Travis but damn I don't see how anyone agrees with ESPN on this.

I guess I'm dying on this hill alone, that's fine.

That fact is there absolutely would have been an articles on Deadspin, Barstool, etc. talking about how Robert Lee was announcing a game in Charlottesville had he stayed on the assignment. Not because people were offended, but because that's a pretty big coincidence. Everything was done in house until someone leaked the change and then Clay Travis got to create his own narrative.

I think you are naive to think that the "leak" was not more BS ESPN virtue signaling.

You are correct that it ultimately is a nothing story but it does also show how bizarre and out of step ESPN is with its audience.

The story should be: "No one gives a ****."

Sorry if this has been posted but I didn't see it anywhere. Is this where we have gotten to in this country that someone can't do their job because it might offend someone that you have the same name as a Civil War general? Might as well and change the lyrics of the star spangled banner to "Land of the free and home of the wussies".

This is where we are now.
The Country has a ton of absolute idiots that think the world evolves around them.

While it is stupid in terms of how far PC we've become, I get the move. Why even risk stirring up unnecessary distractions and drawing political/racial attention to what is supposed to be one of the most enjoyable weekends of the year. There are 900 other games they can switch the guy too. The ironic thing is, I'm pretty sure the announcer is of Asian descent.

Did they honestly think anyone would be rioting at the football game over the play by play guys name? Not to mention he is of Asian decent.

Why would it get deleted? It is more sports related than the eclipse.

Agree on Eclipse. Just saying you have to literraly sift through this board now for UK BASKETBALL info. Shouldn't be that way when there is a general discussion board. This topic leads to politics. Yuck. Can we go ANYWHERE anymore without politics???
