The quickest way to stop the thug-defenses and increase scoring in college basketball is to apply the 3-second rule to both offense AND defensive players

It'll stop the waiting-in-a-dark-alley gang-rape that goes on now when a perimeter player gets free to drive the lane, and it'll make the big men play one-on-one (instead of the current zone-driven congestion in the paint) and put some touch back into the game at the rim. It'll halt this stupid "I'm sitting here waiting for you so I can flop" crap under the bucket, too.

or, allow more time to work on fundamentals.

Most of these players just lack fundamentals.

Zone defense is so common, because most teams can't shoot. Not sure why you can't let players and coach interact 20 hours weekly during summer.

Give them a lot more time to spend during summer is a great way to improve quality.

We are very physical team on the boards and the play we get away with would not have been allowed 20 years ago. The game is what it is, we play a physical style inside.

I actually disagree. We should be a physical team on the boards but we're not. We get most of our offensive rebounds due to a few different factors. Zone defenses are typically bad at rebounding. We have a taller team. We are more athletic most of the time.

Our rebounds are more finesse based. We tend to tip it up and around the other team until we control it. Very seldom do we go up strong and rip the ball away, and when we do, several of our big's are soft with it and get it knocked or ripped away from them.

Our height makes up for lack of position at times, but we get boxed out quite often.

You could spend 40 hours a week and it wouldn't make a difference. If you can't shoot, you can't shoot. College basketball has suffered from over saturation of the product. With every major and even minor conferences being on TV, players have gone everywhere and the talent is more spread out. This goes for coaching too. Imagine adding 2-3teams in the NBA. The product would drop immensely. Yes, you would still have the great players but boarder line guys suddenly make teams and being relied on. Teams in college basketball have gone to a muck it up approach. Play zone, grind out each possession, and be physical. The best way to stop the mugging is call fouls when they happen. Drop the shot clock to 30 seconds and call 3 second violations. It would open the game up.

Why not just have the officials call the fouls. That solves the whole problem.

Exactly. We don't need more goofy rules or points of emphasis, just call the fouls as they are written.

I agree call the fouls. They started out doing it last year, but gave up way too soon. A lot of people were complaining to let them play. Let them play what, because what they've been playing the last 30 years isn't basketball anymore. Call the fouls and stick with it. The players will either adjust, or they'll be sitting on the bench watching the walk ons play.

Let us cater to the individual offensive player and take away help defense.Last time I checked basketball is a a team sport.I love tough defensive teams and someone willing to stand and take a charge. Why should the rules be changed to help a gifted offensive player, makes no sense. In the NFL now, the defense stands no chance ,especially defensive backs, all to help team scoring.College basketball is just fine as it is.

And when it was, just last year, made a point of emphasis....did they do it?

No.

Pay attention. Been there, done that already.

Didn't work.

Next move.

Try something else that is simpler than asking them to use their tiny brains...use the damn game-clock. Hopefully they can get that right, and at least it's non-judgmental, a number, easily verified or refuted by the seconds gone missing from the clock.

Problem solved.

I'm guessing we will start seeing much less zone with teams instead seeing how physical they can get by with. Our bigs need to be decisive today.

They weren't changing any rules. They were just calling fouls that are fouls. Basketball is supposed to be a game of skill and finesse, moving freely without the ball, pick and roll, and back door cuts. It's not supposed to be about who can be the strongest bully and get away with the most fouling, but that is what is has become. When a defensive player has his hands on a player on offense with or without the ball and is impeding his movement it is a foul and should be called. For everyone that complains let them play, well I agree let them play basketball, because what they're playing today is not basketball. Bring skill back to the game stop the bully ball!!!

CLUTTER !!

Pay attention. How about this novel approach, enforce the rules as they are written and don't fill up a rule book with more stupid rules. Grade each official after every game and if a ref repeatedly refuses to call the game as the rules are written, don't give him anymore work. Bet your *** things would change if they quit getting work. As it stands now, short of calling a fan an Egyptian, refs have zero accountability.

Lord, if they did that the games would be 4 hours long!

lol true - but 30 years ago they didn't have the replay like they do now, plus all the extra tv time outs, etc
