This is just my opinion but I never understood why some people think that players that came Duke but transferred from to other schools shouldn’t be considered as former Duke players but players that players that transferred to Duke from other schools should be considered former Duke players because whether they transferred to Duke or they transferred from Duke neither type of transfer played their entire college career at Duke. In my opinion any player that has put on a Duke jersey is a former Duke player regardless of whether they started out at Duke but ended up somewhere else or they started at another school but ended up at Duke or how long they played at Duke whether it was 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years. Like they say opinions are like buttholes everyone has one and that’ll just my opinion.

They always have a connection to Duke that should be honored, but claiming them as ours for the NBA tally is poor form.

You know that saying, how it's not about who starts the game but who finishes it? It's sort of like that. A guy who transfers to Duke is the guy who finishes the game. Or think significant others: Sure, you never forget your first, but the one you choose to settle down with for life ranks a bit higher, to put it mildly.

A player who transfers from Duke to another school simply to change schools, and not for family or health reasons, is not one who has appreciation for Duke, and therefore should not be remembered as being from Duke. He is from the other school. One exception, Billy McCaffrey.

Where does Elliot Williams fit into your sacred rule? Family reasons? Why make rules at all? Meant to be broken.
OFC
First of all, it is not a sacred rule. It is only my opinion as to the situations in which departing Duke players should be remembered as being from Duke. It does not disturb me that Elliott Williams, who did not leave Duke because he preferred to play for another team, but because he needed to be close to family during a time of hardship, may be remembered as a Dukie. That is how I remember him and Billy McCaffery. You apparently believe that any player who ever played one day as a Duke Basketball scholarship recipient should be remembered by Duke fans as being just as much a Duke contributor as Corey Magette, Elton Brand, or Zion Williamson. I respect your opintion, so let us just say we disagree and leave it at that.

OK, Devil. Let's just forget it. Both of us have misunderstood one another. As you may know, I EXCLUDE a lot of players from the "family" (Kyrie for one). Sorry, Bud. Let's move on.

I'm honestly curious why you exclude Kyrie from the Duke family? Not trying to instigate, just wondering.

I would say because he only played a handful of games.. but I still consider him Duke family because of the impact he had in those first 8 games he played..

I really feel like that was going to be the 5th National Championship that year if he didn’t go down with the toe injury.

Curious how people feel about Rasheed Sulaimon, in regards to the “Duke family”..

Sheed should be considered part of the Duke family, he did graduate. His career ended much too early but he seemed to rebound both on the court and in life after the time away.

Did anything ever surface from the rumors around him during his departure?

I would say it's a pretty close call between him and Taylor King for most infamous and shameful Duke career under K. However, his departure was not of his own (direct) choosing, which earns him a pass some may not extend to any transfers or somehow objectionable departures.

He was heading down the road to addiction by the time he arrived on campus and it just spiraled from there. He technically transferred, but it was one step ahead of being kicked out, basically.

Agree that Kyrie is part of the Duke family. Duke was rolling when Kyrie was healthy. Such a deep and talented Duke team with Kyrie, Smith, Singler, MP2, Kelly, MP1, Curry, Dawkins, Thornton, and Hairston. Suliamon is also part of the Duke family. He had a fantastic Freshmen season, his sophomore season was inconsistent but it got better in February, specifically remember the double OT game @ Syracuse. Suiliamon was expected to be a leader alongside Cook and Jefferson during the 2014-2015 season and came off the bench as Duke’s best perimeter defender, rumors I heard was he blew up in the lockeroom after Duke lost @ Notre Dame that season. Sounds like Sheed couldn’t accept his role on the team.

Kyrie is definitely part of the Duke family. He could not have been a better teammate on the bench while he was hurt and didn't have to come back to play when he didn't look 100% in the Tournament. During the NBA strike he came back and took classes. He occasionally comments favorably on Duke commits and wins. He is in the family.

I say yes to Sheed also. I don't know what happened with him, heard a lot of rumors I don't want to repeat, but he played hard while he was at Duke and got his degree.
