Wanted to follow up on our recruiting story yesterday with some additional info left on the cutting room floor/not meant for mass public consumption/scuttlebutt and answer any other questions you may have.
(ICYMI: https://www.on3.com/teams/kentucky-...tucky-basketball-relationship-jmi-recruiting/)
- Some questions about the Caleb Wilson/negative recruiting angle: Other schools saw Kentucky's mishandling of that one, especially their confidence down the stretch when momentum had completely flipped to North Carolina. UNC was throwing the kitchen sink at the kid to get it across the finish line while UK was more reactionary -- and not grasping who was actually calling the shots. Role/being the focal point came up a bunch, too, but the general collapse and bad intel late made competitors think Pope wasn't ready for big boy recruiting.
- General messaging has been an issue, too, leading to distrust and some burnt bridges at the grassroots level. The obsession with playing for the name on the front of jerseys, taking down NBA signage in the facility, publicly announcing you prefer portal experience and immediately recruiting over your highest-rated high school kids, etc., and then trying to get a top-10 kid to believe you're gonna put him in the league in eight months as the guy has been an obvious struggle. I've heard the word "trust" come up often, many families liking Pope the person and Pope the basketball mind, but struggling to get there in preparation for the next level.
- The basketball staff is very similar to the current roster: tons of pieces, but issues with role, identity and leadership. Some guys are stretched way too thin, others maybe need more on their plate, but in general, Pope has taken on far too much individual responsibility and would rather have the weight of the world on his shoulders to say it's on him rather than divvying out responsibilities or adding necessary help. Yes, he needs a GM. Yes, other qualified candidates have approached him about doing it. He feels he's got all of that under control and instead prefers help with funding the roster he builds. Lots of people are wearing lots of hats in that building, and it's hurting them.
- Leaking the $22M number has really backfired, and most believe that was a calculated decision by Kentucky. They earned a reputation last portal cycle for recklessly throwing money around and other schools intentionally drove up the cost in these recruitments, same thing for these '26 kids. I've heard of coaches calling Kentucky's targets and telling them they'll say they offered something insane just to see how far Pope is willing to go to put more money in their pockets and open up cap space elsewhere for the kids they actually want. Understanding player market value and establishing a negotiating identity (again, a GM would help) must improve. You can't say you're Kentucky and refuse to get in bidding wars, then overspend for secondary options out of desperation.
- "They have a bunch of B+ players and a $22 million roster in college basketball right now," one industry source told KSR. "That is not a B+ valuation." That matches the eye test.
- Had someone I trust in the basketball world share this with me, and I think there's a lot of truth to it: "Pope is capable of fixing the basketball product, but he’s going to have to acknowledge that’s all he’s qualified to do. Not build rosters, not run the social media, not run the marketing, etc. And that’s going to have to be clearly (and probably harshly) relayed to him."
In general, it's all fixable -- even the JMI stuff. But there is a lot to be said about Pope just gaining experience and learning from early mistakes without completely drowning. He caught lightning in a bottle last season with a good roster that fit well together, but didn't shorten the learning curve in all of the other off-court aspects of the job. I included this in the piece yesterday from a good source: "I don’t think he knows how to play in that sandbox yet. I don’t think he knows how to play in this game yet."
Another good source said this: "I think people are seeing potentially an ego in him that they didn't necessarily see a year and a half ago. That's kind of spreading a little bit. You take that with what some people are seeing on the recruiting trail and maybe a little bit of arrogance -- and don't get me wrong, it's ******* Kentucky, you should have some arrogance. But they're seeing that with how this roster has been constructed, and yeah, it's been negative for him in public perception."
And another: "Pope doesn't have allies in the business."
