Honestly...here is the problem - fan bases aren't connecting the dots.

These ridiculous contracts and subsequent buyouts are why it costs $100 for a parking space after the giant required "donation" before you still walk a mile to the stadium and overpay for subpar seats for which you have a seating license.

Instead...fans wear these contracts and how much we/they are paying their coaches as badges of honor and point to them as proof about how serious we take college football.

We are all idiots.

To be fair, I think Penn State fans have already had a pretty good run at showing how much they overvalue college football.

Liberty is reportedly signing Hugh Freeze to a new deal that pays him ~ $4M annually. 😮

Franklin is not our enemy, he is our friend. NU can defeat his Penn State team, as we did with Vanderbilt, if Fitz can get his act together, and as long as NU does not abandon their principles, which includes not treating our fans as commodities.

This **** will stop when fans have to cut the frivolous stuff out in order to take care of what is essential, and that time could be fast approaching. That is why I think Ryan is an idiot for literally giving away $200+ million dollars for a program that really might not go anywhere, as there won't be too many people watching the games. OSU had a lot of empty seats for their non conference games sans Oregon. CFB isn't all that with the younger generations. I don't blame them. There are a lot of better things to do with your time and $$$$ than watch an almost 4 hour sporting event.

Take a deep breath. Pat Ryan could burn $500M for fun and still be just fine.

I’m simply not a fan of 10 year contracts for anyone. In ANY industry. Sorry if that upsets the Purple Koolaid drinkers. PSU is PScrewed. We may be too if Fitz or CCC decide to be complacent and keep cashing those checks.

Trouble is that CFB has been captured by finance. It has been all about the benjamin's since the BCS era came about. Once the annual take for CFB hit the billion mark, everyone wanted in. Why do you think the Playoff Committee is dominated by corporate board members and university presidents? Why do you think Texas and Oklahoma are jumping ship? $$$$$$$$! To survive NU better abandon their principles, as they have just had $400+ million injected into the program. The donors want their investment to pan out.

It isn't my $$$$, just think there were better ways to spend it. The new stadium isn't going to ever be filled to capacity, with exception for the first few games and not sure Fitz has it in him to really turn things around to get back to 2018 type seasons. Stadiums are low on the priority list for incoming recruits. It will be embarrassing to have all new facilities and not be able to get top players to come to Evanston.

Why do you speak for all of the people you are not? Donors want their investment to pan out? Are you a donor? Do you know the high end donors at NU? Have they clarified their definition of panned out? Why are people worried how OTHER people send their money? It is their right to spend it how they like! Burn it if they want, it is theirs not ours.

My 2 cents, I hate the money argument. Do people really think these salaries are paid to Coaches out of the goodness of people’s heart? It simple supply and demand NU grads. PSU signs Franklin to a high dollar contract to prevent him from going to USC, LSU or Florida. They have to pay fair market value ( as defined by what these other institutions would be willing to pay them) or above to keep him. They want to keep him. Would I do it? No, but it’s not my money.

Pat Ryan doesn’t view his contributions to NU football as an “investment” that needs to “pan out.”

A more cynical view. Stadium reno might lead to a short term increase in attendance, at least in terms of % of capacity, due to the novelty of the new stadium, and the reduction in seating. We've seen this happen again and again. Then, the novelty wears off, and we'll have a more sustained bump with visiting fans from Enormous State University that, perhaps, have struggled to get seats for the first few years. Then, we'll be back to where we were with 20-25k for non-con and bigger crowds for teams with large visiting blocs. I'm ok with this, but I'm also ok with the stadium as-is.

If I were PSU, I would have happily let Franklin walk if one of the other programs wanted to buy him out. He’s been pretty mediocre there and I’m surprised other big time programs are even interested in him.

Yes, I know the high end donors. A number of them were my fraternity brothers, and of course they want their investments to pan out, which means winning or at least competitive sports programs, as well as their names on sports facilities.

Mostly the “principles” and “fans as commodities” parts.
Fans aren't now just a commodity? Once upon a time, a long time ago, a football team was the commodity and the fans supported that. Now, the fans are the commodity and the football team is necessary to secure the financial commodity the fans provide. This is the inversion of college football from a college sport to a money making enterprise it has become. It is a perversion of what college sports should be. These are the principles I'm referring to.

I agree under the condition that I knew I could turn around and hire Fickell, Campbell, Mark Stoops or Schiano as a replacement. These extensions are absurd on their face, but under a WAR lens, less so. I think the hit rate on USC/LSU/UF hires is much more likely to be 1/3 or lower than 2/3 or higher.

How exactly would that help us beat PSU more often?
