If Jasper can be as good as Fears

They have similar frame, similar size, probably similar athleticism, similar skill sets, ranked similarly in high school

Could Jasper be as good as Fears in freshman year

Kid looks dynamic as hell in his clips but they are just clips. He’s one of the kids I’m most excited to see get on the court. If he has Dillingham level impact (which I think he could) I think we’re Final Four bound.

Fears' skill set featured lottery-pick-level penetration, mid-range pull-ups, and was mainly predicated around taking his man off the dribble and using his sheer brilliance as a ball handler to create space for his shot.

Jasper Johnson is not a natural point guard like Jeremiah is. Jasper's bread and butter is going to be off the ball. He will play some spot minutes at point guard, but Jeremiah is a natural point guard.

Jasper played in the 8th region his sophomore year. Have to confess, never saw "top 15 player in the country" coming.......

Jasper won’t get the minutes Fears had last year and he won't be the best player on the team, Fears was.
But if JJ is as talented and demands the defensive attention Fears did, this team will be much better than I thought.
But I do expect JJ to be exceptional by March, so he is a guy we really should be putting more emphasis on when we're talking about key players. He might not be great in November, but he's going to be legit by conference play.

I have to admit I haven't seen much of Jasper via videos but just remembering his dad playing football and if he even has 1/2 the talent his dad had he's going to be just fine.

I personally don’t think so. I was very impressed with Fears and thought he was one of the better freshman I had seen in years.
I agree with you. I didn't get to see him in very many games but if he was as good in those other games as he was in the Kentucky games he is an absolute stud. Was so impressed with him

I think Jasper will only play 20-23 minutes a game but should be a 40% 3point shooter, 80% free throw and double digits scorer. That should be plenty for this team to be a F4/title team with all the other good players and depth on this squad.

Shooting 40% from 3 is a lot to ask from a freshman. Hope it happens, but it's rare.

All you have to do is watch ANY of his tapes. When he gets his feet set and in a groove he barely moves the net when it goes in. Not to mention at 6'4" ive seen him dunk on several players 6'10" and taller so hes got not only a pretty left handed shot he can drive the lane and finish with a dunk from his hops and athletiscm. Plenty of reasons UNC, Bama and everybody else wanted him. Im sure he will look like a freshman some games and only weights about 175 right now but im sure he will gain some muscle this summer and there will be games were he looks unstoppable and like a lottery pick. Good thing is with this team if Jasper is on a off night we still got Oweh, Lowe, Aberdeen, Chandler, Noah, Kam and Hawthorne.

Fears was phenomenal, that Oklahoma team was a CIT squad w/o him. Jasper Johnson won’t carry anywhere near the usage rate that Fears did. He could maybe have that kind of usage and impact as a Soph., but it’s not happening this season. Fears has a very mature game but his shooting splits weren’t elite by any means. I hope JJ is a better 3 point shooter, he should get better looks on similar volume. JJ will be off ball more too, it’s just a tough comparison.

I think he absolutely could be, he was a top 10 rated kid for the longest time until he committed to us. I think they underrated him now because he committed so long ago. I agree Fears was a special talent but I think we should wait and see just how JJ translates. We have had plenty of freshman over the years that were Fears caliber or better. This seems to be a well regarded class overall.

He simply can’t be as good as Fears. This team is too good and too deep to allow one player to dominate the ball like that.
I do agree with this but that doesn’t mean individually he can’t have an impact that would be similar if he got the same PT and shots. I believe he will be a top rotation player at some point.

That is very true, I think JJ will be a better overall shooter for sure. If his game translates to the level that Fears did penetration wise than he will be SEC freshman of the year caliber.

I remember Dilly played like garbage in summer games, Wagner "dominated" in HS show games and summer games

And Dilly turns out to be super efficient offensive player for us

Hope Jasper can do the same.

I think his offense creating ability is what we seriously lack last season.
