Basically said (paraphrasing) that Kentucky represents everything we say we like about college basketball.

Playing for the name on the front of the jersey. Committed to defense. Six guys who came back. Two juniors (counting Alex) who are significant contributors.

Neither Mike chose to make an affirmative statement, instead one of them choosing to say, "Calipari is their coach, and that . . ."

"...and that..." what? What was he implying?

I used to listen to m&m all the time, but I stopped a few years ago because they talked about NFL 90% of the time...and that was in the offseason. Should just rename their show Mike & Mike on ESPNFL.

I heard it too. Greenberg was basically implying that the reason people think Kentucky is ruining college basketball is because of Calipari's "reputation." The way he said it, he clearly did not agree - he was basically ripping the people who did that. Golic on the other hand, said something like "that's the way it goes" (don't remember the exact words as they were talking at the same time), which I took as him leaning toward the "where there's smoke, there's fire" crowd when it comes to Calipari.

Bilas responded to that Calipari comment with something like "Well that's part of it but it's also because it's Kentucky." [implying Kentucky is hated because...it's Kentucky]

I listened to it and was very proud of Bilas. Seems like he is making it a point lately to make sure Kentucky is getting their due acknowledgement and reverance. Just really hope we close this out. This team is special and they deserve to be heralded not just as a great basketball team, but a program that truly does things the right way.

Exactly why I can't listen to those 2 clowns anymore. Literally all they talk about is the NFL.

I was gonna start this thread if it wasn't already here. Yeah, he was gushing praise about our kids, their character, and how they are handling all of this. Really nice to hear because it might be the first time Mike and Mike are hearing it, as they don't really follow cbb.

Over 20 million people listen to ESPN Radio. Given their morning drive slot, I suspect that M&M has more listeners than probably any other sports radio show in the country. Why would you be surprised to find that someone listens to it?

I listen to Mike and Mike for a few reasons:

1) There aren't any better options available to me. Fox Sports Radio is two Northeastern blowhards in the same time slot who don't really impress me with any knowledge or informative guests. Just two bombastic dudes who enjoy hyperbole. I could download podcasts of KSR or something else for my commute but I'm lazy and sometimes I just want to turn the radio on.

2) Familiarity. At this point, it's sadly just a part of my morning commute. It's just second nature to have ESPN on the dial.

3) Guests. Like Jay Bilas today, occasionally they will have informative and/or entertaining guests.

I do wish the SVP show was in that time slot. They can actually intelligently discuss other sports besides the NFL. They are also big on college sports, which is a lot different than the NFL obsessed Mike & Mike show.

I wish they'd do more college stuff, too - but I suspect there are a bunch of people who listen to sports radion in the morning driving to work who aren't really huge sports fans. For that demo, the NFL is all important - it dominates the sports landscape. The Mom dropping off her kid and then heading to work knows Peyton Manning. You start talking about other sports much, you lose her. Contrast with SVP - the person listening to sports talk in the middle of the day is probably more hard core. You can talk NBA and not lose that guy. IOW, it's all tested and driven by what listeners of each show want to hear. Just a guess....

We've been to three Final Fours in the last four years and have ended a lot of folks seasons.

Embrace the hate, if we weren't hated it would be mainly because we were irrelevant or sucked.

Who cares what talking heads spew? It's just tonic for the haters and something we should be laughing at.

Yup, just like Lou said, all they want to talk about is NFL crap, well that's fine during the season but it gets old really fast.

I listen to Detroit stations if I'm driving somewhere and they do the same thing. They talk 70% Lions and about 10% Tigers. I know they want to be a football city but the Lions suck and they always have. The Tigers deserve more airtime. I'm getting to the point where I hate the NFL, especially ESPN, they talk about the Dallas Cowboys every day like they are winning super bowls every year.
Guys like M&M are so uneducated too, look up the facts with Calipari and learn what the truth's are instead of being lazy.

bear with me on this - I'll bring it back around to Jay Bilas at the end

reading some of the threads from fans on other sites, they have to ask - why don't we get more 5* recruits at our University? which, btw, was the same questions we were asking when Cal was at Memphis, Roy took over UNC and Vitale recruited for Duke twice a week during ESPN basketball games - and I just wasn't ready to accept the answer to the question of why would a kid want to come to Lexington.

and the harsh answer was - even with the occasional hits with recruiting - we didn't do much to differentiate ourselves... at least not until we built the practice facility. And that still wasn't enough. The "but we're Kentucky" just didn't have enough impact to kids during the era of Michael Jordan.

What Cal has done is just what anyone who approaches it as a business would - what do we need to do to differentiate this program from everyone else - and the answer is putting the players first....and to be honest, its kind of a "well duh" type of response. Why didn't anyone do this sooner?

Too many coaches were about what are you going to accomplish here - in the context of what are you going to do for the program, the university and for me - instead of being about what can we do for you? and the attitude was only after you accomplish something here can you be ready to go - and if you don't buy into that, we're going to ruin your college career. Good luck at a lesser school kid.

and Cal's approach has changed that - by making it about kids getting their dreams - which is for 90% of the kids that Cal is targeting - not a college education; the result is he has opened up a pipeline to UK. And telling the media that the year will be a success when on the NBA draft he makes his kids millionaires and not based on whether they win the national championship just feeds into it even more.

UK fans have finally come to understand that Championships are a by product of getting that pipeline and you get that pipeline by putting the kids NBA aspirations first, ahead of everything else. Of course a statement like that causes a knee jerk reaction from the people who think they are basketball purists.

Cal understands they have to attend class, they have to stay out of trouble, they have to practice servant leadership for all of this to work, but they in turn understand the payoff from having to work hard, being disciplined, is a potentially huge NBA contract after an 18 month commitment. A life altering you just won the lottery event.

But he isn't apologizing for a kid that attends the basic math, english, and elective classes without considering the long term education plan - because the next step is the NBA. They make the grades, they attend class - they do all the things that a student must do to be a student athlete, and quite honestly, the people that want to say we are running a NBDL franchise are just hypocrites because they'd expect the same of their program if given the chance and they'd applaud their players, coach and program for doing so.

Cal just hasn't take it one level up - he's at the point where there is a pool of talent - more talent than he needs - so he gets to be choosy for the most part - and that means, not rolling the dice on a kid with anger issues, or questionable guardians or driving a range rover as a Junior in high school - and that lends itself to what Bilas is talking about .

These kids make the grades, they don't get suspended, they play for each other and they do what they need to do, because they trust that Cal at the end of the day is going to make every decision about them getting the most out of their time at UK - and the payoff is worth the commitment to servant leadership and hard work. They're not going to mess that up.

inevitably one day we'll get a kid that doesn't buy in - an off campus incident, failing a class or not being part of the team on the court - and we'll hear about it, but until then UK has a product the fans , the university and the team itself can be proud of - and Bilas and many others are taking note as other schools deal with the failure of the university and players trying to match it (in terms of off campus issues, academic integrity, etc.,)

Superb analysis Tanked. And you are probably right about us one day getting a bad apple, and if that happens, the haters will line up and ignore all the great kids we have gotten and focus on that one. Forde will be at the front of that line.

and you could argue the fallout for trying to keep up has been harsh. Look at how much Pitino has aged, look at what he has to deal with - and he's a national championship coach 2 years removed living in the shadow of a program he helped build.

Syracuse, UNC, Duke - all have a potential or known black eye facing them in their efforts to stay at the top of the mountain

Kansas has had a hiccup here and there and Indiana is just a dumpster fire now, in part because of their focus on trying to slay the UK dragon.

It's more about the truth than reverence.... Jay just being honest and that's why I respect him so much... It's true, UK is doing everything for basketball, than any other team is doing, but people like their own team, and hate UK because they're winners..... Being from Duke, Bilas can relate to that, because look how cat fans hate Duke.... I just hope cat fans can give Duke credit, when credit is due them....

Jay probably knows these players better than any of us, having met them... He's called their games and listened to them talk, as much as any of us.... If you hear KAT and some of the others on the team speak, you would say they were well educated and nice guys...

People talked about the Harrison twins being for themselves, and then you see Andrew stand and give Georgia seniors an applause as they go off the court at the end of the game.... They're all nice guys.. They go to class and to their work and make grades, and so far all of Cal's guys have kept clean... Some players have come back to win.... WCS could have went in the first round a year ago.... Probably Poy too.... The ones that come back usually graduate, and want to win a championship... UK isn't selfish, and they play for the name on the uniform...

I don't listen to them much, prefer SVP and Lebatard because they don't get overly excited about everything, but in the Mikes defense, you're on nationally from 7-10 am - morning commute time on the East Coast. That's prime NFL real estate.

The only reason mike and mike do so well is because it's espn radio. Lots of people aren't even listening to it anyway. They just tune in while working or for something to do in the morning. And yes it is completely NFL obsessed. I don't listen to them and have all but stopped watching the NFL. The most overrated professional sport in the history of sports.

Best post I've read on our site in many a moon, Tanked Cat. You put it very succinctly. Thanks for the breakdown, friend !
