This Cat will contribute more than I thought. He was looking to attack in transition. Can handle and thread the needle. His defense also flummoxed Braden Smith in the first half. You can tell he’s a pro, though still young. Confident player.
I completely agree Wunky! I think this guy has some serious skill and it’s gonna show up more and more with each passing game! It’s gonna be very exciting to witness!

His air ball 3 I would out in nerves.
He flies up and down the court, is super aggressive on D, pushes the ball up the court and just plays with a ton of energy.
Damn Pope has his hands full.
I think in a month it will really hard to keep Jelly off the floor.
I love his game!

I think he’s major key in what type of lineups Pope can play. If he’s capable of playing minutes, then I think you can probably play a more traditional lineup with a 4/5 combo on the floor. I’m just not convinced JQ, Garrison, or Moreno can be on the floor together. I think MO and Jelavich are the traditional 4s. MO can and should play the majority of the 4 mins. If Jelavich can contribute, he’s MOs standard backup. If not, then it’s probably more small ball with Noah or Williams at the 4. In my mind, we are better with a more traditional 4 on the court.

Quicker on defense than expected. Good passer too, without echoing any hyperbole from Dykes. None of our bigs was burying the three so he's got a chance to separate a bit if he can shoot as advertised.

I prefer Jelavic as the big man at the top of the key passing to cutters rather than Garrison.

I said this summer people are underselling Kam and Jelavic. Shooting will improve once the nerves settle and he gets his legs under him/used to contact. Players development under Pope is good. I think he will adjust quickly. I was really impressed the defense this team played for the first game against someone else.

Refreshing to see, wasn’t it?👍

Cal’s last 4 teams couldn’t guard and last year we couldn’t.

This team will guard.

Thats going to be his big contribution IMO. Garrison, Moreno and Jelavic giv us 3 solid bigs. Add in JQ and we are SALTY
The rebounding difference from last year is the biggest change other than overall athleticism. We now end possessions on missed shots. That’s the main reason we lost any games last year outside an absolute stinker of a game.

Very refreshing to see. We are big on the perimeter again with athletes. Athletes that know how to play though. I did find it funny a road team hits their first three again lol.

I agree. Not just last year. Cal’s last 4 teams couldn’t rebound either.

That put too much pressure on the defense.

I know we had Oscar for 2 years and he’s a magnificent rebounder. But he was only one rebounding on those 2 teams. As hard as he tried he couldn’t get them all by himself.

And Oscar’s only defense was defensive rebounding.

If he didn’t get the rebound he wasn’t stopping the putback.

We have at least 3 bonafide rebounders on this team.

Product of Cal taking what he thinks is the best talent, but never thinking about how those pieces fit. He should have recruited a massively athletic 4 and backup big to help Oscar or in games we needed more post defense. Then he didn’t prioritize bringing anyone back for depth and expierence or shooting.

Then he goes and gets a bunch of shooters, but again no defenders or rebounding.

True. But when they double and triple teamed Oscar it opened the lane for Toppin and Brooks but they didn’t fill the void.

But I am glad that Pope seems to be recruiting to need vs making the best player fit the need.

I noticed when both him and Moreno were in, their length was really bothering Purdue.
very much so, and I like the look with him out there with any of the other big men for a high low big man to big man look, he made some nice plays and looked good passing inside the paint to the other big guys. Gotta love how this team is constructed. We have so many weapons !
