When our new Athletic Director has to make a coaching change to lead our football program, I have great confidence in Jerimiah Donati. Sorry, it won't happen this year. But, I would not bet against it happening next year. Here in Beamer's 5th season, we are 12th in the SEC. Contrast that to Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss and Eli Drinkwitz of Missouri. They won 10 or more games in both Years 4 and 5. Right now, in Year 6, they both have 6 wins with a good chance at 10 or more wins, AGAIN.
After Donati fired legendary TCU Head Football Coach Gary Patterson, he hired Sonny Dykes, who was a proven, successful Head Coach. What has Dykes done since going to TCU 3.5 years ago? 32-15 record, including 5-2 this year. He has taken TCU to the national championship game final. TCU is the winningest team in the Big 12 since Dykes became their Head Coach.
I believe Donati is making plans in case he has to pull the trigger on Beamer. That includes identifying well-heeled boosters to contribute to Beamer's buy out. I believe that includes identifying potential replacements. He will look to our history to see what Head Coaches have had success here in football;:
Paul Dietzel: won our only conference (ACC) championship. He retired as coach:
Jim Carlen: won 8 games twice in 11-game schedules (when not winning 8 games in a season here was a barrier). He was fired for non-football reasons by eventual disgraced and corrupt President Jim Holderman who himself was fired;
Joe Morrison: produced 2 Top 15 teams (never been done here before). He died.;
Lou Holtz: produced 2 Top 20 teams here. He retired;
Steve Spurrier: produced 3 Top 10 teams here (never been done here before). He retired.
What do Sonny Dykes and the above former USC coaches have in common? They all had prior, proven success as Head Coaches. You can't hire just anyone to come here and win in football. We are just 300 miles, at most, from the Universities of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Clemson. Those 4 have won national championships since the 1990s. USC is a tough football job. You just can't roll the dice like Arkansas did with Sam Pittman and we did with Shane Beamer (neither of the 2 had been Head Coaches nor even college Offensive or Defensive Coordinators prior to their hirings.) and expect to win in a conference as tough as the SEC. Of course, Sam Pittman was hired by Arkansas one year before Beamer was hired here. And as we all know, Pittman was fired a couple of weeks ago. Hiring proven, successful Head Coaches do not guarantee success, But, it improves the odds. I don't believe we are paying a guy $8 million/year to produce up and down, up and down years. I believe the expectation is winning consistently. By the way, Beamer "snapped back" at a question about our play-calling? President Harry Truman said it best: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". Beamer gets paid $8 million/year to take such questions. If he does not like it, then he needs to turn in his keys. Relatedly, I hear that Shula has a contract through the end of 2027. Satterfield, Loggains, Shula. Does anyone have confidence in Beamer being able to hire a competent Offensive Coordinator? In 3 times, he has yet to do so.
Names to keep an eye on should Donati pull the trigger on Beamer next season:
G.J. Kinne of Texas State
Alex Golesh of South Florida
Scott Satterfield of Cincinnatti
Jamey Chadwell of Liberty
Brent Key of Georgia Tech
Those are just some names. There are others.
Finally, a big THANK YOU to Dr. Michael Amiridis for hiring Jeremiah Donati.
