Perhaps the greatest Rock guitarist of all time. Certainly one of the most influential. Pretty amazing considering his career lasted about 4 years and 3 studio albums.

It wouldn't be the same if he hadn't died young. He would be doing a Vegas style show with Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison as well as commercials for Medicare supplement insurance and diabeetus supplies.

Glennnnnnn(n)nnn{n}-esque take, funky.
He was like only a sixth cousin of Emperor Gaozong (at best), his calligraphy was subpar, he was superstitious and scared of his eunuchs. Worst. Emperor. Of. The. Song. Dynasty. Ever.

Just read an excerpt about him playing with Cream the one and only time. He jumped up on stage and played Killing Floor. It was played fast and faster. Cream and EC saw him play this in London and were simply floored because they could not play it like that, fast and furious. They wanted to play it like Jimi but could never. Rumor was EC was totally heartbroken after the performance he witnessed and the one Jimi joined on stage. It came so easy to Jimi and he nailed what they were trying to do so naturally and nonchalant. EC told people like Pete Townsend and George Harrison that we are not worthy. EC was God in those times and this dude shows up as if his Strat is another appendage. It was a wake up call to them. It also changed EC in playing the Fender Stratocaster.

^^^^^^like hearing stories like this. Jimi has a few songs that still blow me away when I hear them. Didn't he really get serious about the guitar when he was in KY at fort Campbell?

Yep.
He was notorious for going to a gig without his Guitar, he would pawn them, he even did this the year before he blew up and 1966. He would do this in London at his heyday. He was very good at finding great deals and making money on the guitar or finding a better one at the gig. He was never in love with equipt. Just a real cool cat

He and Billy Cox used to do shows in Nashville-Clarksville. He was with I think the Isley Bros. a bit and Little Richard.

May be the most overrated, overhyped musician in history.

I say this with all due respect.

Yeah, I think he played in a cover band there with the matching suits and all. My brother saw black and white photos of him on the wall at a club there. Very young then.

Stand up next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand.

If you are going to say this with respect, then perhaps elaborate on why you have such an ignorant opinion? ....with all due respect, considering all of the "greats" list Jimi as their influence and pay accolades on a consistent basis.

Never a fan of Hendrix - too much noise, i.e. feedback, weirdness for my tastes. Can't deny his talent, however. An extremely gifted guitarist who influenced a gazillion young men to play the guitar. I sort of lump him in with Eddie Van Halen - an undeniable talent, truly inspirational to millions but I just never liked his music all that much. The more modern Jeff Beck stuff, I'd also lump together - just too much wringing weird sounds out of the guitar and not enough actual songs. I can't say he's overrated but I can say I never really cared for the vast majority of his music.

He's the GOAT as a guitarist, no question.

Songwriting? That's another skill, and he didn't write a string of hits.

He did, however, take other people's songs, play them his way, and make them way more interesting.

Such an odd picture - Hendrix with a Gibson SG. Undoubtedly the most famous Fender Strat player, it's odd seeing him playing anything else.

I would say Jimi is pretty underrated as a songwriter, Wind Cries Mary, Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Foxy Lady, Little Wing, was covered by every guitarist or band. Cream, EC, Derek and Dominoes with EC and Duane was better than original. SRV did it, Jeff Beck did it live. It was a guitar player's go to. He had many more songs that would be considered a catalog for many artists.
Eric Clapton minus cream was not much of a songwriter in his own right until Derek and Dominioes and Layla, some of best songs were Little Wing and Keys to the Highway, standards by blues artists. Best songs were from JJ Cale, After Midnight, Cocaine to date.

Jimi was just a freak, he could play blues, he could play jazz chords, his guitar was almost a part of him. He never played clean, always distortion or theatrics but think it was just his state of mind.

I always said SRV was a baby conceived by Jimi Hendrix and Albert King with maybe a little buddy guy. Jimi was Buddy Guy Otis Rush Jeff Beck.

Yeah, there's some vids around with him playing a V, which is really odd as well.

Some of the notes from other musicians and studio, Gibson was played on Blues, Red House, Hear MY train a coming, Hey Joe on later live concerts showed him playing a Gibson. Just some liner notes things. He would sit in with other artists like Billy Gibbons, Johny Winter, Buddy Guy and played mostly Gibson's.
