John Daly almost wound up being a field goal kicker for the Colts

Came across this story today and had no idea that golfer John Daly almost legitimately became a kicker for the Indianapolis Colts in 1991 shortly after his out of nowhere winning of the PGA Championship as an alternate that August.



Apparently he was a pretty good high school kicker and hit 24 consecutive extra points his senior year, which was his school's record, and he could hit field goals from beyond 50 yards. Here's an article from the LA Times around that time with some additional details:

I know it's something very specialized, but I'm surprised there hasn't been any crossover sports stars that come on to be NFL kickers or punters. I'm just picturing a Nikola Jokic out there towering over everyone and booming punts or Luka Doncic as the Cowboys kicker. Come on Jerruh, make this happen.

Speaking of kicking footballs for the Colts.. check out Pat McAfee, the Colt's punter a few years ago. He's on the rise as a talk-show type guy. Has a podcast, was on Barstool, and is now on Mad Dog Radio (Sirius). He has some seriously funny stories from the NFL.

And technically.. McAfee is a 3 sport player.. NFL punter, WWE wrestler, and played a triple A baseball game for charity..

All his stuff is great. And he's actually legit on air. Comes on in the afternoons on Mad Dog and it's good. Half these guys either have no personality or never played football. So it's refreshing to hear kind of an r-tated take on sports, from a guy who was in the trenches.

You see his 30min special on playing AAA baseball? It might be my favorite.

"I'll tell you what, I do not like the fact that these guys who play baseball every day of their lives, are not getting a single hit on this guy (pitcher).."

I love that he spends that entire interview in a constant stretch of his right leg. Must be brutal to punt/kick, day in and day out, once you get older.
