Posted: Wed 4:47 PM, Jun 29, 2016

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Joker Phillips is back in college football.

Phillips, who was the head coach at UK from 2010-12, has joined Urban Meyer’s staff at Ohio State as an advance scout, a source tells WKYT.

Sounds like he's gonna be a paid film-watcher and glad-hander. Oh well, we all have to do something to put a roof over our heads and food on the table.

Unless he is a crazy man I doubt if that is any kind of a problem for him.

He and Meyer have some history - they both coached together at Notre Dame. Joker is a good position coach and was a good OC here under Brooks IMO. I'm glad he's getting another opportunity to coach somewhere.

True but his wife is a doctor and he made millions at UK and made about 200k for his 15+ years as an assistant. He is doing ok.

Not about the money. Joker loves the game and wants to stay apart of it I believe. Terrible head coach, but I wish the guy success. Always liked him.

Huh?? His recruiting is about what almost buried our program and we are still trying 4 years later to recover from.

Good for Joker. He's a young guy ... imagine he'll get another crack at a coordinator level position at least.

From head coach at an SEC school to quality control position. Why is Joker taking such a crap job? He shouldn't need the money.

I dunno. Pretty big fall from HC in the SEC to an "Advance Scout" at tOSU. That's pretty much like starting back in the mail room again.

FWIW, I recall talking to Joker for about 5 minutes after a practice session while he was CIW. Seemed like a pretty cool guy based on that brief encounter.

Peace

That was kinda my point in my first post on this thread. I don't wish him any ill will at this point, but it's clear he's working his way down the coaching food chain.

Does a quality control guy even do hands on coaching? I know he doesn't recruit off campus.

Let's hope not. As long as Meyer is at OSU they will be good and that is a good thing for us. If they are good then they recruit more nationally leaving more good prospects in Ohio, our main recruiting territory.
I cannot wish any success or happiness for Meyer and/or Ohio State. I despise both...

-Jokers tenure as HC is the worst thing to happen to UK football in my lifetime...b. 1972. Brooks had the program in solid shape...Joker ran it into a ditch and set it on fire.

-Probation (curci, mumme) were bad...but joker was abysmal.

Mark Stoops has a worse record than the worst thing to happen to UK football in your lifetime. Yikes!

The WR coach sunk Florida's football program. Yeah, our fans aren't dumb at all.
While it is kind of silly to blame Joker for the recent decline of Florida, it's even sillier to continue to defend his regime. You appear to be the only one on this board who does that. I wish him well, and have nothing personal against him (it's not as if he failed on PURPOSE), but there's no disputing the damage that his tenure did to this program.

-Joker inherited a sold program and went 6-7, 5-7 and 2-10 for an overall record of 13-24.

-Stoops inherited Jokers dumpster fire and has gone 2-10, 5-7 and 5-7 for an overall record of 12-24.

-apples/oranges.
Joker inherited worse recruiting classes than Stoops. Look at the numbers, recruiting classes in the 60's. Lol at solid program.

I didn't defend anything. What did I say that was a defense of his regime? He did a poor job and deserved to be fired. The same can be said for Stoops.

It is amazing that anyone can defend what happened to UK under Joker in any way. Pulling out recruiting rankings which become irrelevant after kids are on campus is just obscuring the reality of what happened to a program that went from being competitive to being abysmal in 3 years. Joker was a successful coordinator at UK only when under the tutelage of a HOF head coach in Rich Brooks. He was a position coach at all other stops. He inherited a solid program with a good staff and took it down while alienating players and fans at every opportunity. He was a good player and member of Brooks' staff. He was a terrible head coach and his career since then indicates he has some issues which haven't been resolved. There is no parallel with Mark Stoops on any level. Let him go.

Joker Phillips is not responsible for Florida's recent downturn. Coach Will Muschamp and his archaic offenses were. Ironically the slide began with Meyer leaving and then coming back for that less than inspired 2010 season.

Joker committed minor recruiting violations stemming from impermissible contact. Coming from Gator Nation Joker Phillips did not get Will Muschamp fired.... You saw what a competent head coach was capable of this past year before our QB got suspended.

I doubt he will play a major role in Columbus, so I wouldn't count on their demise anytime soon. Buckeye football is like Wildcat basketball, the program sells itself. Add an elite coach and national titles will follow. Gator football is along these same lines.

You guys need Ohio talent and with Urban recruiting Florida as heavily as he has you have essentially gotten players who you wouldn't have had Tressel been there. We'll see how well Stoops can mold that talent. J.M.O

Again, where did I defend Joker. Let me type this slow so you guys understand. Joker deserved to be fired and so does Stoops. Joker was a bad head coach, so is Stoops. I'm not sure whyet you're having such a hard time comprehending.

Thanks for confirming my understanding of your earlier post. Generally a coach is given 4-5 years to show whether or not he's got things going the right direction, although in Joker's case it was obvious early in year 3 that it wasn't so he deservedly got canned.

Barnhart maybe shouldn't have given Stoops the extension when he did but that ship has sailed. For contract reasons Stoops will get his fifth year short of an incredibly bad dumpster fire 2016 season and/or Baylor type scandal

If you're that unhappy with UK FB, you have the option not to watch the games and not to post on this board.
