Pate is my favorite football analyst out there and he brings very valuable outsider expert perspective to our situation. Some interesting points were raised about what he thinks we should be looking for in a new coach, realistically where we are as a program in the pecking order, and who he thinks we should go after. He is still very high on Matt Campbell for this opening and other high profile openings to come, and I am beginning to believe him. His thoughts about Franklin are interesting, and his one (somewhat heated) interaction with Kraft is fascinating.

Good interview, thanks!

Pate said he didn't like that Franklin was fired. Then later says he values a coach that can evaluate and develop talent. And I don't think that is Franklin, so I wish he would have made that connection and acknowledged that.

I got the impression that he was very delicately acknowledging that Franklin was not fully developing his roster talent. He made a point to emphasize that Campbell lands higher rated recruits than Iowa State's resources would typically allow due to his coaching abilities.

No offense, but I completely disagree that Franklin can’t evaluate talent. I’m not saying this directly at you, but anyone that thinks that is just making a blatantly ignorant statement. Franklin recruited at a level not seen at PSU since the mid 90’s. He had a lot of guys go to the NFL. There are currently 49 former Penn State players in the NFL. That isn’t by chance. On top of that, there were several years that they had two first round picks. Last year, Abdul and Carter both went in the first round. The year before Olu and Chop went in the first round.

Now, you could make a case that Franklin didn’t develop talent as well as some others, specifically at QB and WR, but TE and DE talent was off the charts and it shows in the NFL Draft. Again, saying he couldn’t evaluate/identify talent is just blatantly false.

I liked what he said about Campbell being able to recruit players for reasons other than money . If it's all about money that's a really hard game to play .

I would agree that his talent evaluation is 9/10, but his roster development and results were an 8/10 based on the sheer amount of NFL talent we have had. Kraft, and quite frankly most of us, felt that he can’t get past that 8/10.

How quickly we become spoiled because PSU hasn’t been an 8/10 in a very long time. Someone who wants to rebuild will be really happy to get their program to 8/10 with Franklin. We just better hope PSU isn’t less than 8/10 at the same time or we are going to look really foolish.

Do we all believe that Matt Rhule can recruit as well as James Franklin? I am not so sure about that
It is very difficult to say, but if bringing in a “Paterno guy” brings in more NIL support from the old school base, maybe. But pre-NIL, obviously Franklin by a mile.

Sure … why not. Win some games against top competition and it becomes even easier.

I personally think CJFs recruiting has been overrated by many. Especially with regards to certain position groups , mainly DT (arguably the most important spot after QB), LB and obviously WR.

I also think CJFs player development was somewhat underrated.

his in game coaching and offensive schemes have been rated properly by everyone

What evidence is there that Rhule will win some games against top competition?

I thought he was an excellent evaluator of talent, the problem was schools like Georgia, Notre Dame,
and Alabama followed and cleaned up.
Development was a different story , too many coaching changes.

Franklin and the guys he surrounded himself with were always very good at identifying talent very early. That’s not the question. The question is how well did he and his staff develop their players once they were on campus.

Matt Rhule...the guy that failed in the NFL same as Nick Saban and others, has never had a school like PSU
to recruit from. As typical this board is expressing angst concerning a past PSU person....McGloin sux,, Millen sux, and every asst sux.

Pate is an Iowa State super fan, he wants Campbell to succeed. Pate also needs to programs to participate in his spring summer campus tour, shitting on every HC that gets fired isn’t going to open doors.

Agreed. Probably a better way of saying what I was trying to say. I also think he was very good at identifying lower rated guys who turned out to be better than their star rankings. But way too many misses on high level talent in our home recruiting base IMO

Recruiting was probably a 8.5/10. Player development an 8/10 and his in game performance was no more than a 7/10 or lower
