Just awful. We live in a rural setting where ATVs drive the roads at fast speeds quite a bit, not all, but some, and I anticipate a similar tragedy someday on our road. Herds of deer up here by the lakes.

The young son of a high school buddy died in an ATC crash. Lost control, hit a tree and was launched into it. Died immediately. Very fun machines but you are very vulnerable to serious injury if something goes wrong.

Definitely should have helmets on especially when on roads and traveling at fast speeds.Too easy to just jump on and go and forget safety equipment. Kinda like seatbelts... People say I am only going down the road to the store yet most car accidents happen within 10 miles of your home

Wear a helmet when driving anything other than a car or truck. I rode past a neighbor and her kid on bikes this morning. Kid had a helmet, Mom had a ball cap

Also wear a life vest on the water.....look at what happened in Bucks County at a state park this week

Like most related things, it's mostly about how these things are operated ... and, unfortunately, most of the people who want to operate these things are either needless risk-takers, or feel empowered to take risks while on them (like they "demand" them to act stupid, even if they otherwise wouldn't).

More troublesome are motorcycles (should be banned) and bicycles in heavily traveled areas (just an absolute pain in the arse, with many folks who don't know what they're doing ... combine pedestrians, distracted drivers, etc. and it's a recipe for disaster).

But, yeah, most everyone I've known who has been into ATVs is not the kind of person you want making safety decisions for you. Or any decisions for you.

Son1 cycles hundreds of miles a month in LA. We worry privately just a bit every day without making him crazy. He promises us he always wears a helmet but USC weekend he rode to and from our Echo Park air bnb without one.
”it’s my neighborhood Dad, don’t need one”
…..sigh…..

My BIL is a serious bike rider. He tells me that he’s in a bike shop and there’s maybe 15 people there. The owner speaks up, asking how many have been hit by a car and 12 raise their hands.

sadly, his girlfriend died in the accident

Really sucks. They were having fun as young people do. It is very sad that their lives changed in an instant. Julian has to live with that life altering moment the rest of his life thinking about what he could of did to not have that happen. I cry just thinking of how he feels. And this happens every day to people. Try to enjoy life while you have it. Sad

Terrible. I’d not willingly get in or on an ATV, snowmobile, or helicopter. Colleague’s son died snowmobiling in Canada.
Growing up I had all kinds of snowmobiling trails around me so that was a lot of fun and safe but you needed to stay on the trails. A lot of the state game lands had cables stretched across and thats a no bueno.
Around here in Las Cruces I see a lot of the tricked out ATV's running around. At least once a week there is a rescue unit out this way because the ATV renters don't know what they are doing and tried going up inclines that they had no skill to be trying.
