That was one of the best in-game trolls I’ve ever seen. Even the Badgers fans around me got a huge laugh out of it, down to Willie dressed like Rick Astley. Can only imagine what it would have sounded like in there on Saturday with what would have been a full house.

Hat tip, NU Creative.

I remember the student section just irritating Bob Knight out of his mind one year with Hoosier Daddy (whose your daddy) chants. IN my memory, which may be accurate...or not....He flipped them off or made some sort of gesture....But last night,,,CLASSIC

Yeah, Bobby didn’t get it at all, assumed they were taunting an IU player about his heritage, and very animatedly lit into KO. He was so certain he was right while being dead wrong. Pretty hilarious.

To say Knight had a short fuse doesn't begin to describe it. I think he had nitroglycerin in his veins.

Valentine’s Day, 1999. IU played this whack 3-2 zone in the second half, basically triple-teaming Esch on every possession.

NU lost in overtime and my memory from the third row of the student section includes him yelling “who’s your daddy now, mf’ers!?” I might be wrong, but I think I’m not.

The next year, which would turn out to be his last visit, he gave us candy when he exited the tunnel for pregame warmups.

"Better f***ing beat Purdue" remains the best coach rant of all time.

They would put him in jail if he did that in today's woke snowflake age.

In high school, my junior year ice hockey team was very talented but immature. We started 0-5 and really should have been 5-0. After we lost that fifth game, our next practice was basically Bobby Knight on ice. We skated sideboards for an hour (try doing that in goalie equipment!). Never saw a puck. Between sets, we got our asses chewed like a dog chews rawhide.

It was the best thing that could happen to us. We went 10-3 the rest of the way.

That's the main memory I have of Bobby. Tossing candy from a bucket into the student section. That and his constant apoplectic rage at the world around him.

I was at that game. Knight went ballistic - nobody knew what was happening. "Hoosier Daddy" didn't seem like the kind of chant that would make a coach lose his mind... I lost my voice screaming at him - my insults were a lot worse than "Hoosier Daddy"

I found out the next day that Bobby Knight was aware that one of his players didn't know who his father was, that the kid had grown up with no father. He thought NU's student section (and later much of the crowd) was taunting that player. It actually made sense.

I felt bad about it and gained some respect for Coach Knight, who was maniacal, but clearly loved his players.

I watched the game on my telephone and do not know what this thread is about.
Rick Astley showed up in a solid blazer and striped shirt and told the Wisconsin buzz-cut crew to dress like him if they want to get laid.

Was this the game that he threw the chair onto the court? Can't remember.

No that sort of rage was reserved for Purdue.

“Did I agree with everything he did? No. Did he agree with everything I did? No,” says Bova, the ref who ejected Knight that day. “But let me tell you, I have nine grandkids, five of them boys that are athletic, and I would have them play for Bob Knight tomorrow.”

Knight and O'Neill. What a couple of trolls. The difference - one of them won a bunch of games. But both bad people

He had demons in his brain. Crazy, maniacal demons. That thrived and multiplied on both the weakness of his juvenile immaturity and the strength of his voracious ego.

Something about being a Big Ten ref draws a lot of dimbulbs.

Did anyone find a version of this online that shows it from the very beginning? It does sound funny. Hopefully someone at NU knew to film the entire thing.

He should have gone to jail for choking one of his players (and then denying it until the video came out). Knight has always been a massive piece of **** but maybe I’m just too “woke”.

Knight grabbed the player by the throat as he was walking off the court.
If you watch the video I think you'd agree that no crime was committed.

Hell, coaches used to hit their players. I'm sure Knight did that too.

Knight graduated from Ohio State and then enlisted in the army in 1963, just as America was getting involved in Vietnam. Thats a bit unusual. He was Army's head basketball coach by age 24.

Brilliant coach, but also a perfectionist with serious anger management issues.

Enlisting in the army was not unusual in 1963. There was a peacetime draft, and enlisting rather than chancing the draft was rather common.

Knight was an avid fisherman. He appeared on many syndicated fishing shows, including ESPN's Jerry McKinnis' Saturday morning show. His outdoor persona was that of a "good ol' boy" and not the fiery BB coach

Unfortunately, he is in poor health as the result of dementia. He no longer makes public appearances and time is running out

What you describe in your first sentence is assault. And then Mr integrity lied about it. But keep defending him if it makes you happy

I always grab someone by the throat when I want to talk to them. I used to just call them by name, but that didn't always get their attention. The throat grabbing thing? 100% success in getting their attention, although I do have to squeeze a bit sometimes.

When you enlisted, you chose your occupational field iirc, so you could get into a job that had low likelihood of combat or even forward deployment, whereas draftees were trained according to the needs of the military - so infantry, etc.

How did that work?
Did the guys who enlisted get preferential deployments over the guys who got drafted?

Yep. My father enlisted as a combat engineer by choice. He served 6 months active duty then some years in the reserves.

That certainly worked for Knight. Being the head basketball coach at the academy by age 24 will certainly keep you out of the jungles of SE Asia.
