Its kind of humorous that they slipped this in, in the middle of the conference championship games, to somehow, get by most people who would care. I didnt notice ESPN announcing it did you? I guess they figure all the blogs and wire news that pick up on the story wont have as much impact but i guess that remains to be seen.
So another 5 years of unfairly picking the champion of D1-A football(can we please get rid of this FBS crap? it insults my intelligence) is set in stone as other sports such as college basketball enjoy fruitful experiences, last minute shots, die hard upsets and fans enjoying every game because every game is that exciting to watch. We will also have a playoff system not only in every other sport at the collegiate level but please keep in mind this also includes every other college football division and ranking that is known to man kind, except for D1-A.
I wonder how long the excuses of "not enough time to study", "too hard to plan" "lack of fan support" will stand while other divisions of college football do just fine. perhaps if fans got the picture that the college postseason was for them and for the players of the teams and not just for money hungry hippos, they might feel like traveling more.
As it stands, 85 of 119 schools are completly banned, either by rule or by economics, from being a part of the postseason and therefore should spur an anti-trust lawsuit but why does no one do anything or speak up? We might as well start rounding up the teams to play in the BCS bowl games. really no point in playing the season. Lets just have a roll call of the 10 or so teams playing in the BCS bowl game the past 8 years and 9 of those teams out of 10 will be in the running at years end.
We, as fans and players have to answer ourselves a really serious question. Is this sport going to be an inter-collegiate sport or a semi-professional quasi sport? If its the latter then let the rich schools start their own conference and let them have at it, along with the other sports, while the NCAA will form a fair system that is supposed to represent a fair-minded set of universities that should be teaching in the classroom valuable principles to fans and players other than how to get rich.
I think thats about as fair as you can get. Let the 34 or 35 schools have their scheme and let everyone else do it the right way. Then ESPN, DISNEY and Mickey Mouse can rake in all the profits and other networks can negotiate deals with the rest of the teams.
