I worked for Kaid's dad who has managed the swine facility at OSU for a long time. I haven't seen Kaid since I left OSU in 2001 but that was a hell of a debut.

It's hilarious to listen to Spates' commentary when you know what's coming. That was about as auspicious of a debut as I have ever seen. The only one that comes close is Daniel Frishkorn's pin of defending champ Johnny Thompson in the OSU Orange-Black dual when Frishkorn was a freshman.

Not to jack this thread but I was thinking about Johnny after this match today and didn't he pretty much come out of nowhere to win it as a frosh?

Loved the Goon announcing....

Tries to explain that Kaid is walking into a buzzsaw
"I wouldn't want to be the guy across the mat from him"

Shocked at the first TD, but still in denial about what is happening
"That was a beautiful shrug...but he's going to have to get about 10 of them because Cody Brewer is going to score a lot of points"

Kaid sticks him...
"No way!"

The goon is Brewer's first college coach Jack Spates he does that every OU dual he commentates

To be completely fair it was an OU broadcast so you should expect pretty biases announcing.

"No way!" I'm pretty sure the referee had a much better view of what was going on that Jack did. It's in the record books now, so it doesn't really matter, but it looked like a pin to me. I have seen a lot of pins that were much more questionable than that one.

It doesn't matter, as a Wrestler, you don't risk being in that position. If he would've won by a defensive fall, people could gripe...a little. Before the mat was slapped, there were a few different times that the pin occurred. My questions to the people questioning are;

1. What do you think about Brewer getting put in that position?
2. What do you think about Brock coming out and even trying double over, inside trip on a guy that is 6 inches taller and a defending NC?
3. What do you call it when both blades touch the mat?

I think the question of the fall is that the ref was just a tad slow on when he called it.

By the time he whistled and slapped the mat, Brewer's shoulders were way off the mat. But he was pinned earlier. If the ref had slapped the mat in time, there would be no "controversy".

And it wasn't a fluke. Brock came out to play. Took him down immediately, then took him down again to his back Two great moves. I stand corrected in my previous assessment of his abilities as a freshman.

Of course, this was one match. He has the whole season to go through still. I don't want to pull an oberebo and call him a five time National Champion like the old man will. But he's got a lot of potential. He's going to be fun to watch.

1) Agree whole-heartedly, and told oberebo that immediately after the fall. I said at the time that he wasn't pinned (going by when the ref slapped the mat), but that's what you get for being on your back like that. As it turns out, he was pinned previously to when the call was made. Good call by the ref.
2) Ballsy. Not afraid of the moment. Champion material. Any of these, and probably all.
3). Touch fall in freestyle. The blades need to touch for longer in collegiate style. And they did. Good call by the ref.

There is homer announcing and then there is what happens during every Sooner wrestling broadcast. Manzer does the color for all of our low-rent Cowboy Basketball broadcasts, but still maintains a fair amount of objectivity and doesn't scream like a fanboy. You can be a fan/former player/former coach and still call a dual/game objectively. Probably speaks to the lack of on-air talent available for college wrestling.

Regardless it was comical to see the emotional swing in a span of a 1:30...made the win that much sweeter.

Very true, I guess I've listened to enough of Spates doing these that I'm just used to it.

Spates is an *** clown, always has been. He was predicting a ton of points in the Blaylock match too.... only by the wrong guy. It is being broadcast on Fox Sports, he could at least try a little bit to be objective.

Spates must be embarrassed after chalking each OU wrestler up to be this and that but each OSU wrestler with the exception of Schaefer making them look very flat footed and overwhelmed. Must say that performance was nice to see, especially against them gooners

Reminds me of the broadcasters that Chicago baseball fans listened to for years. Ron Santo for the Cubs was full of passion and lived/died with every play while the Ken "Hawk" Harrelson would just lose it on the umpires while calling Sox games:

It may have been broadcast on Fox Sports, but it was a sooner sports telecast.

You typically tailor your broadcast to the audience. Who do you think had the larger audience? That happens all the time in various sports. Usually the announcers have enough class and awareness to taper their homerism.

It's a 0u telecast, hosted by 0u people, tailed to 0u fans. I would expect the same when the OSU telecast is done.
