But, I thought it was impossible to recruit at BYU?
It is…easier now than it use to be…but still more difficult than other p5 schools
Money can buy you 1-2 big recruits
Last year was their first season in the big 12 and being viewed as a p5*(major) program. Much easier to recruit to a B12 school than a WAC/MWC/independent religious school traveling to play in small mid major gyms vs playing on national TV against name brand programs all year .
Pope was successful enough in year one to prove they can compete there and validate them as a legitimate B12 option (especially for any west coast kids partial to staying out that way…at that point you’re only competing w a handful of solid west coast basketball programs)
This offseason was also the first year of the massive open bidding wars for recruits w the NIL gloves fully off. BYU was thrust into the spotlight being associated w the UK/Coach Cal/Ark saga….and BYU is taking that attention and momentum to lean fully into it hiring a big up and comer nba name. The media attention and drama on the heels of a successful B12 season and a top 20 preseason ranking has woken up the big money boosters and has them bought in….
the same would have happened with Pope there despite you trying to make a point that doesn’t exist
