“I understand the assignment!”
I understand that rocket science makes rockets blast off into space but I sure as heck don’t have the ability to make a rocket. You’d think a guy who was working on his medical degree at an Ivy League would get that. Or maybe it gave him a false sense of assuming he could accomplish anything if he put his mind to it?

Tommy Amaker was a smart dude too — polished, impressive résumé, big reputation… and totally in over his head once the lights got bright at Michigan.

Mark Pope feels like the same movie with a different lead actor. Great story, sharp guy, says all the right things — but UK isn’t a lab experiment. It’s the big leagues, and “good intentions + intelligence” doesn’t automatically equal banners.

Honestly, Pope probably should’ve stuck with the med-school path — we’re short on doctors, but the world’s already got plenty of basketball coaches.

I had an investor who started off as a police officer. This man worked his way up the ladder in the police department and while doing so, he bought a run down house, completely remodeled it and flipped it.
After that first house, he used his profits to buy another house and continued this pattern only he stopped flipping them, he rented them out.

Years later, this man ended up with 350 houses and not one single mortgage. He knew and understood money. He used debt to make money. This investor ended up traveling around doing financial seminars making over $5000 a weekend. While doing this he expanded his company to let others do his work like maintenance.

Long story short, this man called me one day and we had lunch. He told me his story and then said I need you. My maintenance department is a wreck and was told by a friend he needed to hire me.
I took over his maintenance department and learned on day one his guys could not make a bologna sandwich. My point in all this is how this man was super smart in finance but not so much when it came to reading talent.

After yesterday, I made the statement to my wife that I feel Coach Pope may be like Mike (the investor). He is smart but can not read folks. Pope has a team that is not a team. He picked them. Hell, the opposing coach said in his news conference how his team watched UK and showed how they are not together and play individually.

I fired everyone that was working for this investor and started over. It was hard taking on all this extra work with my existing contracts but the money was super good.
It was hard trying to find people who were skilled, honest, dependable, hard working and could work together.

Mark Pope may need to stick to being the GM in todays sports world. he hired guys that can not play every game. We have a deep bench but it only shows when we play Bellarmine.

I have found it hard to be a die hard fan these days. I start off watching then lose interest. I have a man cave as they call it that is top notch with UK stuff that would next to impossible to find these days and now think in 5 years it may be worthless in todays sports world.

I hope this turns around but I do not think at this pace UK will be in the NCAA Tournament. If we do, we may end up in that stupid play in game.
Ugh.

This is not good.

lol Pope can’t handle big personalities like Stokes. Can you imagine Pope coaching someone like Cousins?! Pope is a terrible recruiter and he just doesn’t have the resume to get these top 10 players. It’s going to become even harder than it already is if he doesn’t turn this season around.

Recruits and their families/ agents /camps are stupid.

Our season is going off the tracks and we may miss the tournament. You dont think they know Kentucky fans are getting loud about Pope not being a good fit. Why would you commit with a future up in the air.

Pope and mitch made this bed though.

Pope miscalculated just how far the program has slipped. The entire college basketball landscape has changed, but it is going to take more than just throwing money at the problem to fix this mess. We need a top tier coach to come in and rebuild. It all starts with culture and recruiting. Pope has failed in both areas.

He probably sees how Peterson can pick and choose when he wants to play and figures he can do same

yea I was about to mention that. Is anyone else getting tired of “Daryn Peterson watch” every time Kansas plays along with the lead up to their game? (Eye roll) and he’ll play and have a good game and then shut it down at some point during the game.

talk about an attention w****.

regarding Michigan, were they not knee deep in turmoil and self-imposed sanctions when Amaker took that gig?

He’s clearly not turning it around. He’s only considered a different starting lineup and coming off a game where Williams hit 8 threes and utilized how he was yesterday is pure stupidity. I’ve said elsewhere and will repeat here the weight of the job has crushed his coaching ability. He’s a better basketball coach than what we are seeing now but it appears he cannot coach under the expectations of the program. I certainly hope he does the honorable thing and resigns.

Seems like the main investor in this year's team is not happy with his return on investment and perhaps is not putting up as much for this recruiting class. The amount of money Pope spent on this team will unfortunately affect funding in future years.

BBN WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
Is it us?
Is it the coaching staff?
Is it this roster or the way they are being played? Why no Jelly or Noah Vs BAMA?
Is it Recruiting?
It is so hard watching so many players on other teams that Ky tried to get or already had thriving & being stars.

Theres a reason Izzo, Wright,Bennett struggled getting alot of top tier recruits not local . Top guys dont like systems. And Pope is nowhere near those 3 on any level - imo if Popes stays which he won't but if he never sniffs another JQ level player unless they are in state even then maybe.

Those three names have four National championships between them, so system may not be the devil.

Also, have you watched any Duke or Houston this year? If so, watch their offensive sets and see if they look familiar lol.

We have a lot of problems and system isn’t one of them. Rotations determined from the roll of a dice? Sure, that’s not helping in the least.

I'd take Billy G over Mark Pope. Billy could recruit.
The Pope frustration is big on here and I get it. But Billy was recruiting guys that couldn't play here. Dakota Euton and a couple others names that escape me.

My post had the word “Pope” in it zero times and you came to a conclusion that I was comparing Pope to Izzo?? I was talking about systems aren’t an issue if HOF coaches with championships used them. That’s the point —- it has nothing to do with Pope specifically. This has happened with you on multiple occasions —- if you can’t start replying to the actual topic in the post, I’m just gonna stop engaging with you. It sucks to have a meta conversation everytime and have to re-explain a very simple post. You’re debating things that are nowhere near the post you replied to.
