Why is he not being redshirted? Is he so valuable on special teams that we must have him there? I just feel like his year is being wasted. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Yeah, kind of. He's also 2nd team linebacker. He's getting experience that he could use to step in as a starter this year in case of injury. Or next year win out right. He doesn't need to gain anymore muscle, so why make him just sit and stew.

We need to learn what a good football team looks like. It has good players that start AND come of the bench. Redshirting is great, I'm all for it. I'd love to have him five years. And we are redshirting players where we can like offensive line. But we also need good players now. We gotta make this happen.

Is he literally only playing ST? He never spells Love? Ever? There is a difference between playing limited snaps at ILB and playing none.

This same discussion was had over Bud Dupree as well when he was a Freshman.

Damien Harris at Bama last season

A true redshirted player does not travel with the team and is a pure scout team player during the week.

He is in the two deep, he is learning game, how to practice each week for a new opponent.

I'm guilty as well, but many focus only on 51 when he gets outrun or fills wrong gap, he does do a ton of good on the football field.

He's learning his craft, learning the speed of the game, learning how to practice, learning what's required of him in this D. It's not like just rolling a ball out on the floor. Lots of football yet to play and when he has done what's necessary he'll get the PT. He's already passed Firios, a RS soph. That's pretty good.

I'm making a complete WAG based on the coaches comments and just what we have seen.

All preseason, the coaches raved about Love's leadership and command of the defense.

I think most of us would say Love hasn't been a real physical force on the defense.

I dunno....maybe the coaches have been relying on Love to make on field defensive reads and calls....and Kash doesn't have that ability as of yet.

Posters obsession with Kash's PT is reaching Jon Hood levels.

He's a freshman, he's contributing, he's giving us solid depth. His time will come, it's no conspiracy.
Just wondering if he isn't going to play hardly, if his current role is more beneficial than a redshirt would be . I have no conspiracy theory and could care less if he's from Eastern Kentucky or Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Just an innocent question I've wondered.

I can only figure it's because Love Is a team captain and made that trip to media day. Maybe he feels he will look ridiculous if Kash performs at a high level ?

Not as ridiculous as your post. I assume you have a brain and that was sarcasm.

Not bitching just wondering. Curious as to why. Have you ever been curious?

Not curious. Kash has landed some big hits on STs. He is the future at MLB. Firios playing well too, now that he is healthy. These guys bring heat. One of the reasons we have been fairly solid on STs.

They really do. Unfortunate that some have gone with the predictable Richie Farmer treatment for Kash because those who watch him can see that really does have a lot of ability and is physically ready to play. Has a lot to learn but really plays aggressive and in attack mode. Firios has been impressive lately and it's the first time I've noticed what many were waiting to see from him when he got here and that's an aggressive hitter/tackler. Might be getting some confidence, same with Kash. Special teams can be a good breeding ground for that to get you ready down the line for defensive minutes

He always seems to be at the point of tackle on every kick/punt. Ill take it. He will see big snaps next season, and he will be more prepared for it.

People are excited to see him play, like myself, so it's an honest question. I hear where you're coming from but you have to realize that players in the SEC rarely start 4 years at a linebacker position. Meaning, most of the time your LB gains some experience for a year or maybe two and then takes over at that position. Sure, it does happen, but not most of the time. So no,I don't think he's wasting a year at all.

These are the sort of threads that can make others think that UK fans only know basketball and not football.

A year spent playing on special teams is not "a year being wasted." Special teams are important. Special teams often make a huge difference. A freshman year as a special teams first stringer is a successful one, not a season to be sneered at.

Danny Trevathan spent his true freshmen year as "just" a special teams player. that experience learning the game full speed & hitting were invaluable, & he was a fixture at linebacker tackling everything the next 3 years.

same thing will happen with Kash

Pretty sure he can take it any year before 4th season, injury or not.

Correct.

However, I expect to see a decline in the percentage of players who redshirt in the coming years. The graduate transfer rule has increased the probability that a player doesn't stay at the school for the fifth year. If they transfer, the original school receives no benefit from the redshirt year.

No one said it was a conspiracy.. It was just a question.. Can't someone have a legit question? I would like to see Kash play, but the coaches know what they're doing... Kash will have a lot of time, barring injury to make tackles and get sacks..

Kash is not ready to be on the field and should've taken taken a redshirt. I know we had 1-2 last year that should have done the same. These guys come in and look at red shirting as something negative when it's just not the case. I truly believe if he was ready, he would at least be splitting the snaps with Love. So I believe it's definitely another coaching mistake in playing him this year....

They did get it right with Hoak...I wish everyone would stop asking for him to play. WTH? I can't believe anyone on this forum thinks he would do a better job than SJ right now! Give the kid a couple of years and stop begging for him to be prematurely thrown into this SEC fire! It would not end well and after the first drive, you guys will be calling for everyone's job! If they decided to play him the second half of the season, that would be awful and disappointing. Hopefully, his parents have expressed that should not be an option unless he's the ONLY option.

I think that special teams play is certainly valuable and he has done a pretty good job there. However, it seems to me like he would have been better with a redshirt. I say this because Love is a junior this year. Right now Kash is a freshman that has seen little to no time actually playing behind Love. So, it makes me wonder if he will actually have the opportunity to unseat Love next year. If he does not, then he may very well spend most of next year on special teams again and he wouldn't see the field as a full time linebacker until he is a junior. He could have redshirted this year, spent next year on special teams and playing a bit of linebacker (much like this year), and then his redshirt sophomore year he could have been starting after Love graduates.

Of course, this is all speculation and Kash may beat out Love next year, but if he doesn't then failing to redshirt him seems like a bad move to me.
