Does KBB not realize what has happened to the car market the past couple years?

My son's car was sideswiped on highway (hit & run). Only minor body damage (door, front & back side panels, all metal), but at 13 years old, even though only 110K miles, I expect insurance to call it Totaled.
So I looked up the value in KBB, and they have it at $4K. WTF!!!
If you go to Cars.com I find a couple dozen cars +/-1 yr, +/- 20K miles, and the cheapest is $7,500 with most in the $10-12K range.
So I'm certain insurance will want to just give us $3K (4 - 1 deductable).

Hell, I found a 31 year old Geo Metro priced at over $4K. That's probably what that cost brand new.

So I expect my options are:
- take the likely $3K, add in another $5K or so to get him something
- pay out of pocket for the repairs (also about $5K)
- it is safely driveable, but my Ex would blow a fuse if didn't fix or replace
- seems like there should be another option, but I can't think what it would be (???)

I had to buy a car earlier this year. Ended up with 2012 and it cost me $10,000. And good luck financing if you’re like me and not paddock rich

Good, tell her she can split the cost then..

This is not the time I'd want to be buying, well.. anything really. If the car is truly driveable and this is largely cosmetic, then I would sit tight in hopes that some of this inflation is corrected in 6 months.

My car is 10 years old and off payment for about 5 years now. I have zero desire to have a $500+ car payment right now, with prices of everything else going up, and a full on recession still looming. I'll ride this thing until it dies on me before I overpay due to lack of supply and get killed with loan interest.

NADA is the same way. Price a 3/4 ton truck with a diesel on NADA or KBB and then look at Autotrader and see if you can find one anywhere close to what it priced out.

Fight with insurance based on the sale price of comparable cars, not the KBB value. Never take the first offer from insurance if they total you car.

You have come to the right place.

Just bid one dollar over last bidder to get on stage.

Say hey to Johnny Olsen.

Sure enough, because I've looked at the Volvo line of SUVs before, Facebook just popped up an ad for a used 2021 XC40.. 7k miles.. base trim.. for $39,995. Knowing a range of their prices, I thought this was kind of high.. as the XC90 starts at only like $50-55k.

Brand new 2022 XC40's are being listed MSRP anywhere from $35 to 37k. Now, I'm sure that price quickly goes to $40k with some fees and ****.. but still.. Why would I buy an almost 2 year old car for the same price as new?? I get that supply is short, but this is why no one wants to buy a car right now.. No one is going to willingly get ripped off unless they have no other option.

OT:

Also, while I don't enjoy seeing people lose their jobs or work disappearing.. Car Dealerships can get ****** for all I care. That's an industry that could cease to exist and society would be better for it. I'll just use an app to buy my next car from the manufacturer direct.

There's a prominent new and used dealer in my area.. and their radio ads give all their car salesmen nicknames. Who the hell thought this was a good idea? That a sleazy car guy should actually have a nickname like (and this one is real) Cameron "Make a deal" McKenna.. seriously? I'm supposed to fork over 10's of thousands of dollars to some guy who wants to be called "Make a deal McKenna"? No. Not happening...

Car dealers and realtors.

Car dealers and realtors.

I'll give realtors a little bit of wiggle room because there is some work that goes into showing a home, and orchestrating a buy/sell. Buying a car in 2022 really shouldn't be much more difficult than buying a laptop at BestBuy.

But there are far too many realtors today.. too many that are a "friend of a friend" and just need some people they know to give them business, before moving on to a different career. I think I know about 15 realtors now.. and half of them have been doing it for only a few years.

Isn’t that what carvana is/was?
Literally buy a car then go pick it up?

Yep, and it seems like it's a good business model. Carmax is kind of similar.

Buying a car shouldn't need a car salesman, and a finance manager, to complete the deal.

But who would be there to sell the massively overpriced reducing benefit life insurance that secretly benefits them way more than you?

KBB stopped being on consumers' side long ago. Their customers are insurance and car lots. They cater to the customer base by giving them what they want - a way to cut their costs.

But what they do isn't worth 10's of thousands of dollars, for a few hours work.

I bought a car through carvana 6 months ago. Best experience I've ever had buying a vehicle and I'll never set foot in a dealership again.
I also did 10 months ago. Their prices might be a little higher. But it is much simpler, and they do deliver it to you. The one negative is that I don't think they do older used cars (say under 10K). But one company doesn't have to fill every niche.

That happened to me as a kid 30+ years ago. Insurance wanted to lowball with the bluebook value. My dad found the exact make and model with mileage within 15000 of what we were driving on a local lot. Insurance did't fight it and wrote us a check for the lot car.

We didn't trade up, but we didn't get screwed either.

Yeah, I wrote that last night. My dad had a check in hand. He could have applied it to any car. In his mind, it was for a certain car that he argued for insurance to buy for him.
