About 50 years ago, I was rabbit hunting on hilltop in Madison County, Kentucky near the intersection of Goggin’s Lane and Tates Creek Road. I came upon a small fenced off circled area about six feet in diameter. Inside the area was a small metal marker that read “Birthplace of Kit Carson”. I had no idea that this famous frontiersman was born in Kentucky. I was driving down Tates Creek Road today and noticed the little fenced in area at the top of that same hill. It was unkempt with several scrub trees growing inside the little fence. It saddened me to think that no one passing by wold have a clue that he was born on that hilltop.

80 Proof, if you drive out on Tates Creek and take a left turn at Goggins Lane, look on the hilltop to your left. You'll see a small stand of trees inside of a little fenced in area out in the open on top of the hill. The fenced in area is a couple of hundred yards from the road.

Is this on private land?

Blubo, here's another link which says Kentucky was his birthplace. My guess is that Wikipedia was paid off by the North Carolina folks to claim Kit Carson. :)
Anyway, for whatever it's worth, I did see a marker on top of that hill which said I was standing on his birthplace.
Yeah. austin said last night wiki listed richmond ky as his birthplace. wiki not always accurate.

I know where that's at. I used to live on Tate's Creek and I drove Goggins almost daily.

Anyone who's driven through EKU has probably been on Kit Carson Drive. :)

Thanks for the confirmation, JDee. Kit Carson elementary school is about a mile from the birthplace, but Richmond sure doesn’t seem to want to give recognition to the birthhome on top of that hillside. Seems like the local historical society would want to emphasize this.

If Richmond doesn’t own the hilltop, what exactly can they do about it? I think naming a school after him shows they’re not ashamed.

That said, I think they named the latest schools they just built after school administrators which is a big lol for anyone whose been to Madison County schools. Nothing against those administrators in particular but it’s a bit like Time naming themselves (journalists) People of the Year when their reputation is at an all time low.

Been to the exact spot @ 35-40 years ago. Not sure if the same family owns that property or not.
