I know Kentucky is unbeaten, which is an incredible achievement. But I don't think the Wildcats would be unbeaten in the Big 12 even though they beat Kansas 70-55 and Baylor 69-58 early in the season.
Kentucky is in the Southeastern Conference, clearly No. 1 in football, but inferior to the Big 12 in basketball. SEC's 14 teams lost 64 non-conference games this season, or more than 4.5 losses per school. Big 12's 10 teams have lost 31 non-conference games, or 3.1 per school. BIG difference in quality between the two conferences.
Also, the No. 1 team in the final regular season NCAA rankings, usually the No. 1 seed of seeds in the NCAA tournament, in SIXTY FIVE years only three teams not named UCLA have won March Madness. The odds are stacked against Kentucky in so many ways.
By the way, WVU will open against Buffalo on Friday in the NCAAs. Kentucky only beat Buffalo, 69-53. WVU might do that well against Buffalo. I hope.
One advantage Kentucky will have against WVU, if they meet: It will be the first game of the second week, which will give Kentucky more than one day to get ready for the Mountaineers' ferocious, all-game, full-court press.
I would take the field against Kentucky this year. I would take the field against the No. 1 of No. 1 seeds every year and make a ton of money, if history is any indication.
Let the games begin!
