Kerry Blackshear analysis

Since you guys probably had the most talented team last year and saw Blackshear playing against your elite talent, I'd like your thoughts on him as an opponent...in comparison to elite talent. Only a few fan bases probably understand top tier talent and I wanted to pick your brains on how good he is as a player...if UK gets him I'd like to know what to expect.

I've seen him put up big numbers...he even came into Rupp Arena and put up numbers on UK. But box scores never tell the full story. His measurables look like a decent pro prospect combined with his skill...6'10 who can shoot 3's. But...the fact that he wasn't on any draft board makes me wonder what the hold up is for his stock.

Is he just a great college player...or is there another level to his game that being on a bigger stage with better players could unlock? They are putting him in an All-American talk...and I think he's the perfect missing piece to next year's Kentucky team...but I wanted to know what you guys thought?

He seemed pretty good at VT with all the guards healthy and shooting 3 pointers. Seemed like he was not guarded maybe that close and usually got his points and rebounds while teams were trying to stop other players. Don’t remember lots of great one on one plays,

He’s a good player and you can read a lot about him since he is being really hyped right now. The one thing you may/may not read is VT over the years really had no inside presence...so he was able to operate a little bit as the sole big man at times. If I remember right, we had a hard time with his size those games but when I saw him against competition that had good size and footwork, he kind of disappeared. You can say that against a lot of bigs I suppose. I’m actually surprised he did as well as he did against FSU’s length in the ACCT so maybe I’m wrong.

If he picked UK, and this is just me personally, I wouldn’t expect a Reid Travis kind of year. 7 or 8 PPG and 5 RPG is just my opinion. I would expect him to disappear in games against length. Either way, he’s a good player.

Lol he's not going to Kentucky.
Might be some news coming soon that says otherwise...

But thanks to the rest of you guys!

I do think he's different than Travis...because Travis put up big numbers on a losing team in the Pac 12..which was sub par competition. Blackshear put up some big numbers in the ACC...which I think is the best talent in the nation. Travis gave us physicality...but he just couldn't handle the more athletic SEC. He provided no rim protection.

Though I can see what you mean about length and quickness being an issue...but we just need a proven scoring threat down-low to complete the roster. We have Richards and Montgomery who are long and athletic...but no real offensive games...plus the mid-major grad transfer.

True on Travis in the PAC. Now that I think of it, the ACC really didn’t have many good bigs this year either. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t expect if Blackshear picked UK that it would equate to a lot more wins - I would expect him to blend in and have a couple games where he gets a dbl dbl and then counters it with games where he’s not getting his numbers. Main reason would be the talent he is surrounded with. Plus, the fact that his draft status is questionable may make him force it more this year. His numbers would be much higher at A&M. Just my $0.02 after seeing him.

Folks on the TN side are convinced it’s coming down to UT or staying home at VT. Word out of UK is they also don’t think that they have a chance at him anymore.

May be true....what I stated was what I heard from a VT person.....at that time they didn't think they were getting him back ...but things change

Buzz got more out of him than I thought he had. He might be best off sticking with a coach who knows how to use him and who plays a style he already knows.

OTOH, if can do well under a different coach, that could improve his stock next draft time.

I think UK is probably the worst of the choices he has. Most likely to get lost there. At least he will get plenty of PT at the other schools.

I am a UK fan and I think he is great. I think we need him. You win some and you lose some. But as we know you can land the top recruits and not even make a FF!
