Were the officials aware that the game was going to be delayed when the teams took the field? If so, was there any significance of having the kickoff and then announcing the delay? Because the kickoff occurred, then.... ???

Just thought it was interesting that the game was called (delayed) immediately after the kickoff. I may be reading a LOT more into this, but the timing was curious.

Nebraska’s Butch Hug, Associate AD is in charge of starting and delaying the game. The officials don’t have a say in this matter.

Being at the game we were extremely disappointed. We drove up from waco, Texas mind you. Experiencing tailgate thru kick-off made for much better memories with my daughter than had any of that been cut short. Glad they handled it the way they did. Shoot, even the delay in our seats and concourse were a blast meeting and talking with other husker fans. It all fortified my daughter's love for the Huskers and the state of Nebraska. She's as good a fan I know, at age 25 and raised in Texass .

Not that it matters, but I found it a bit odd that in an era when the head official seems to get "buzzed" after every other play, the only way to communicate the lightning delay was for Butch Hug to run out onto the field flailing his arms.

I assume they rushed the kickoff for some kind of payout from FOX or the B1G. Police and security knew what was up and were quick behind the teams.

The timing was what it was because of when the lightning was within 6 or 8 miles depending on who you believe. The kickoff was actually late so it was not hurried! There are no conspiracy theories involved!

I could see the flash of lightning from my seat right after the kick...I may have even muttered an expletive.
