Larry Watts is such an important dude that I once bought him a drink (it was his birthday and he was at a purple party), but I did not make a habit of it.

Billy
"On the court, Billy McKinney was brilliant. Would John Shurna be the career scoring leader if McKinney had the three-point arc?"

No. Billy C was the best I have seen at NU.
Billy was in my dorm during my freshman year and I got to know him a little it. Not only is he the greatest player I ever saw in a NU basketball jersey, he was also a really nice guy. He was very unassuming and decent. He dated a very pretty little red-haired girl at the time and the two of them were inseparable. I moved into the frat the next year, but I still saw Billy around campus - always ready with a smile and a hello. I am so happy for him to have had a long career in management in the NBA - hopefully he has had a great life. By the way, Scott May (also in the photo), dated an NU girl and came to Evanston quite a bit. I even played hoops with him in Patton gym a couple of times. He too was a great guy.

I really enjoyed this piece. I had no idea the story about the old burial ground. Makes the Cats' history of futility even richer, like a certain billy goat.

Much appreciated. I may have met Larry Watts at one of the first tailgates I attended in the West Lot. The individual went by HeraldCat on the original Chicago Tribune Board.

In any event, whenever I would fly from Alaska into and out of O'Hare for a game I would always make sure I picked up a copy of The Daily Herald there at the airport to catch up on Larry's excellent reporting on The Cats.

That would have been Lindsey Willhite, who was a good friend of mine on the beat. He now does PR for Chicago Wolves.

Larry was and is one of my favorite writers. I used to read his articles in the printed version of The Wilmette Life when I was in high school.

Great 'recent' basketball history in an economy of words. Not sure it could be done in a better fashion. Lots of media folk move on to 'things better than covering Northwestern' . Like Eanet (ok and Ted) it's nice to have lifers. They truly understand NU's history and trajectory.
