I hate the Packers. I love the pro ‘Cats. But, boy Tyler and Dean struggled on the blocked field goal.

For special teams yes.
Perhaps they were in on the FG, but I didn't see them on the blocked punt in the 4th quarter. It was the long snapper / center that got absolutely blown up on that one. He got pushed back hard, and the D-lineman over him got a hand up to block the punt.

Niners didn't score a TD on offense all night, and that blocked punt TD was the difference in the game.

Unfortunately, the blocked FG came from GB’s left side where I believe DL and TL were next to each other.

Unfortunately, that one is on Lancaster who didn't seem like he recognized the snap count as he got a really slow move off the snap and whiffed on Jimmie Ward.

I guess I can post one not so good one if you want to see what happened. Dean got his arm chopped and Tyler reacted really late and took outside guy instead of inside guy.

That’s pretty cool. I guess Lanny botched it.

Looks to me that 2 GB OL are supposed to block 4 SF players. While 95 didn't block anyone, this looks like a problem waiting to happen. Am I missing something?

I believe the Packers had the worst special teams in the NFL this year statistically speaking - ranked 32 in DVOA. And I know some fans would rather blame the players than the coaches/scheme.

But then again, I’ve heard on this very forum that “stats are for losers”.

So could someone please explain to me if coaches matter at all, even in the NFL? Or is it simply the fault of beloved players like Lanny?

“Green Bay finished last in the NFL in special teams DVOA. According to Football Outsiders, they were 30th or worse on field goals/extra points, kick returns, and punt returns. There were blocked field goals, random, inexplicable miscommunications on kickoffs, and the Packers allowed one of just two punt return touchdowns in the NFL this season.”

Wowzers. Read for all the dirty details.

I'm no expert, but watching that play, I am not sure what Lowry and Lancaster were supposed to do. The two of them had to block three guys. I guess if there was better communication, then Lancaster would have taken the inside guy and let the outside guy run free, hoping he wouldn't get there in time. But how do they not know who they are blocking before the snap?

You ALWAYS take the inside guy. In then out. It’s incredibly difficult to block those kicks around the edges, but if you get an inside seam like that it’s very feasible. Bad coaching / execution.

Maybe that's the problem with putting DLs on the FG team. They are not used to the stunts and switches and communicating those pick-ups, which OLs probably see on every play.
