I trust that Sandy Bell had every "i" dotted and every "t" crossed for that trip.

Absolutely…… I don't have any fear of compliance infractions whatsoever….. Putting up all of those teams is gonna cost some bills……and that place isn't exactly cheap to begin with lol…. Hell, I took my family of 6 (including me) there last winter and I think my bill was close to that

This isn't high school. They're not getting a sack lunch. And as for the open bar - no wonder they lost their last game! They were hung over!

LOL….. No doubt…. This article may actually help our recruiting….. 800K with luxury suites in the Bahamas with an open bar sounds like fun to me!!! …and I would imagine most 18-23 year olds would agree

I should correct myself and say it was written by "The Post Game staff" and not the LCJ…. The info came from a records request from LCJ however as stated in the link.

Well, we already know that facts are optional for this writer just by looking at the headline. The trip was taken in August during the middle of the Summer------nowhere close to being in the Spring.

It was a "Seagull Article"-----a fly-by hit piece where the writer takes one sentence from a twitter post, then tries to write an article on it. Eventually just flying-in, squawking and gawking, taking a crap on everything, and then flying away-----"Seagull article."

Yeah, let's focus on UK going on a basketball trip during the summer instead of the worst academic scandal of all time at Cheater Hill.

The writer of the original article was Adam Himmelsbach of the Courier Journal. Just so happens that yesterday was his LAST day at the CJ. He's moving to Boston to take a position with another paper. This has Jurich and Pitino written all over it. Here's the punk's twitter handle. Blow him up.

what's even the issue here? i don't get what's going on.

the Athletic Department is completely self-sufficient, so no tax monies.
the trip itself is perfectly legal by NCAA standards.
no laws were broken.

what's all this hubbub getting at?

Exactly, that little weasel didn't have the balls to report on the YUM disaster and throws this shot as he leaves. He was also the first to try to play the PG controversy clutter.

Gee, why didn't they mention the $350k of booster money that offset the cost of the trip? Maybe it didn't fit the writer's agenda.

I was there and the players most definitely DID NOT have access to the open bar. The players sat at a table by themselves and did not even interact with the rest of the people at the banquet. They even left early, right after they ate.

When is the Curious Urinal going to do some UofL budget stories? Would love to see the numbers from how Jurich is scamming the city of Louisville and the rest of the state of Kentucky with that YUM Center deal.

All of this was done out in the open, and it was wide open, ESPN and everything. He had to have known this and is writing it only to cause a splash and ruffle feathers. No ethics.

Thanks for the info catben. For this hack to insinuate that the players had access to the open bar takes it to a new level. What a piece of trash.

Just for the sake of clarity: Adam Himmelsbach's piece in the CJ was simply an open records request that the CJ did. Happens all the time.

I have no idea if he filed his piece because it was his last days in Louisville, and obviously the question of the YUM! Center's finances and why the CJ hasn't dug into that is fair game, but Himmelsbach just laid out the findings of the request.

The open bar stuff came from another article that isn't linked in this thread any longer. Himmelsbach mentions the open bar but only insofar as to catalogue the expenses.

You sound pretty naive. It's obvious this was calculated and just trying to stir the pot. Bet there wasn't one single article written on the expenses from UL's trip to Atlantis last year or year before.

Anyone who believe Cal would let his team drink at an open bar(or anywhere period) just needs to go ahead and get off the Internet for good.

Yeah...just cataloging line item expenses....

"However, not every expense was as defensible. The school also spent $24,000 to fund a reception for the teams involved. Part of those funds went to an open bar made available to the college teams.

There's no proof the players drank at the reception, but scenarios are in play here. After all, the legal drinking age in the Bahamas is just 18. "

He's just being a speculative dick.

Again, that didn't come from the Himmelsbach piece unless I'm mistaken. We're talking about two different things here. The OP seems to be talking about a blog or something that used Himmelsbach's information and wrote a piece about it.

We get that rag, so I looked at the article. Super huge bolded fonts with the expenses of the trip above the fold. The article is very long too. Just a ridiculous hit piece over absolutely nothing at all. What a way to go out. Pathetic.

Andy Sweeney, who works for ESPN 680 in Louisville tweeted recently:

Since @AdamHimmelsbach is leaving for bigger and better things, will he ever finally reveal if he was BBN or L1C4?"

Yeah, I think his article answered that question.

Wasn't UK the only college team there. If I follow the poster above who was there along with the reception in general it appears the reception was more for the professional teams who came to participate with UK.

How about this nugget of journalism excellence "it is believed that this has never been done before" (referring to UK paying for the other teams expenses).

Well, with sources like "it is believed", how can you find anything wrong with the article?

The CJ is always jabbing at UK, but this article was factual. Adam H didn't throw any punches in his article, and I was surprised. So what, UK went on a basketball trip. They went first class. They spent a lot of money. UK has a lot of money. ul guy at work asked what I thought about it. I just told him the best program in the country can afford it. Told him to stop being so jealous, of our success, and hope Montrell doesn't get in foul trouble during the tournament. !4 years at ul, and ricky can't even go 8 deep into his rooster. Great recruiter. lol

What this will lead to, unfortunately, is the NCAA coming in and establishing all sorts of pointless guidelines on what teams can and cannot pay for during the once-every-four-year trips.

But everything Kentucky did last summer was perfectly within the existing guidelines.

By the way, why focus on this? During the regular season plenty of teams play in these tournaments in Hawaii, in Nassau, in Las Vegas. You think that isn't an incentive for kids? That they are eating PBJs and going to bed at 9:30pm in Maui?

I have always said this, and it pretty much pertains to everything that Cal comes up with, such as televising practices, having combine before the season, etc. If the NCAA has problems with any of this, then come up with a rule against it. Until they do, it is perfectly legal and all the haters can just shut up.
