He's wrong.

Far left will destroy the west first, then China sweeps in to defeat it militarily.

THis will happen before any of that, watch and see... though I guess hopefully we could all be dead by then, maybe not your kids tho.

It's a mistake, the relative peace and normalcy bias of the last few decades, to think the borders are set and our conquering days are over.

This is the calm before the storm.

Why am I not surprised the Political Thread's Leading Liberal is spreading facile, spurious apocalyptic fantasies?

The truth is, never in human history has such a percentage of humanity had as much food, security, shelter and material wealth as today. Asia and Africa have been transformed for the better in the past twenty five years while Leslie's have been mewling about global warming. And tomorrow will be even better as the creativity and dynamism of American capitalism continues to transform the world.

I have no doubt you think this was a good post.

But it’s absolitely wrong and has nothing to do with politics. Just flat out wrong. I mean, it’s just plain stupid. Like really dumb. I’d debate with you but you’ve shown no ability to have a genuine conversation. And that’s not message board sarcasm.

It’s like totally idiotic and it’s why people make fun of Kentucky. It’s like seeing a fat guy McDonalds with 3 Big Mac’s on his tray. It’s like a gay guy jamming out to I Will Survive. I mean, like, just bad.

What he's really saying is...The world as we know it will end, unless you elect the people I tell you to elect & then don't complain when they raise your taxes 30 or 40%.

Spica Orbit
I think what he’s saying is that the population is exploding, global warming is fact, cyber attacks are real, and resources are finite. Do you disagree with any of these things? I’d love you to prove any wrong.

the Earth is much bigger than you realize kid. we are always evolving, finding new tech and new resources. back in the 70s oil was supposed to run out in the early 21st century. in 2000, the polar ice caps were supposed to be gone by now. the Earth has always been warming and cooling with or without man. cyber attacks might effect your bank account or porn stash but they ain't ending the world.

liberals need fear and anger, with that they can convince you that you need their form of government to come save you.

did you know you can get like 500 chicken nuggets for less than 50 bucks. @Mashburned preaches man. you are a simpleton.

go be scared of the temperature outside and be sure to give more of your money to wizards behind the curtain so you will be safe.

Two questions.

1. How many mass extinctions in the history of the planet have been caused by climate change?

2. What is the most recent mass extinction?

You are dealing in theoreticals. The planet is several billion years old. Mass extinctions are relevant to what billionth year you are talking about. And they are all theoretical based on our best scientific judgements. Science theories are like records in baseball, they are made to be broken. So What is your point exactly?.

You hit on my point. And it’s bigger than left / right ********. The earth is indeed billions of years old. There have indeed been multiple mass extinctions.

All mass extinctions known to man have been caused by drastic changes to atmospheric conditions in a short amount of time.

All except one, actually. The sixth mass extinction is underway now. That one is caused by humans, not necessarily climate change, but more broadly human encroachment into habitats.

And it’s bigger than that. The earth is projected at 4.5 billion years old. By all historical indications, humans began to civilize approximately 10,000 years ago. Of that 10,000 years, power grids have existed less than 100 years, humans have created ways to utlize more power than any species in the 4.5 billion year history of earth.

In 100 years, we found ways to utilize the same nuclear processes used by the sun, have filled areas of the Pacific Ocean with plastic, have cities full of smog, have had some impact in almost every biome on the planet and are entirely capable of destroying the habitability of the planet.

So, my ultimate point is: the time we live in now on this planet is anything but typical and the environments of the planet are not stable and infinite.

Why are we concerned that a astronomer is predicting cyber attacks and climate climate change? Did he glean these impending downfalls from the planetary convergence?

Given their experience at viewing the earth through the context of the solar system, galaxy and universe while observing the forces that exist around us... they are arguably among the most credible on the existential threats to the planet.

A big reason for that is because they are searching for “the great filter.”

Lol. You are the worst kind of fool - someone who actual thinks he has some profound insights because he’s gone to school for awhile and can mimic the rhetoric of academics and essay writers. I’ve actually spent considerable time in Africa and Asia and in policy centers in Washington, where I’ve lived for decades when not traveling overseas. I’ve seen the things I describe - remarkable agricultural and technological improvements, an end to cyclic famines and a boom in economies. And the UN has documented it, for those who care to look. You are the lamest kind of faux-intellect who trusts the usual suspects on the op-Ed pages of the publications endorsed by the liberal orthodoxy. That’s because you don’t really know anything based on life experience.

I think his post and subsequent one were spot on... I'm also willing to engage in civil debate on this subject, in fact only if it's civil.. if you start ad hominem attacks on me I'll just ignore your posts and you won't get anywhere.

Let's take one of the astronomer's assertions for starters... he states that we could end poverty simply by redistribution from the wealthiest. How would that work exactly? If we take Bill Gate's money from him, who incidentally is going to donate his wealth after he passes, what happens? What's that look like? Are we all stuck using Windows VIsta while Sub Saharan Africa becomes the new silicon valley? Is that what happens?

And why just their wealth? The astronomer doesn't need his 100k (or whatever) either... we can drop that down to 20k pounds while we're at it and give the rest to SE Asia, right? Why not?

Just think if the astronomer is correct. And you are the lone survivor. If you can find the cash, all of the Burger King nuggets in the world would be yours.

If this does happen, I expect to be like Charlton Heston in Omega Man.

I'm going to give you credit for one thing and admit that you have changed my mind about something. All this time I thought the political thread was large enough to contain your dumbassery. Turns out I was wrong. I'm at the point now that I believe your dumbassery will suffer no constraints.

No one cares when or if you respond. Everyone who has responded so far understands this issue far better than you do. I wonder if there is anything at all you view without a leftist tilt.

You need to drop the condescending tone when you do, assuming you are interested in actual discussion and capable of doing so in a forthright manner. As I have said, I will not engage with you (or anyone) in the same manner as you do with others in the political thread.

I was merely asking questions... not attempting an argument. If I was attempting anything, it was to find a foundation.

Enjoy your beer, respond whenever...

Your lead argument deals with distribution of wealth, which isn’t even mentioned in the article. From there you talk about Windows Vista in Africa. Basically, you asserted nothing that shows the astronomer is incorrect. I’d argue with you but I don’t even know what you’re arguing.

What man has done with power, machines, technology etc.... is amazing and great but I have to give the dinosaurs and plants the win because of the whole fossil fuel era that made all of those things possible. The era of mechanical inventions is almost entirely stunted without oil/petroleum to fuel and lubricants to minimize friction.
