Legend retiring?

I just heard on ESPN that some legendary QB guy had retired. Sad stuff indeed. I heard he was responsible for:

providing food in Darfur
saving lives during 9/11
forcing the communists out of Poland

is there anything else major that he's known for? I had no idea.
